Leonard Leads Dominant Raptors Attack

Despite an abysmal start that threatened to have them blown out of the water early, the Raptors were steadied by the cyborg-like dominance of Kawhi Leonard, who single-handedly righted the ship in the first quarter, pouring in 14 points to keep Toronto within striking distance.

By the half, despite shooting just 34.1% from the field and just 2-for-17 from three-point range, the Raptors were down by just four points.

Leonard led the charge after that, as he systematically tore the Dubs apart in what was supposedly Golden State’s quarter. Kawhi went 5-for-8 from the field, nailed both of his threes, and made all five free throws en route to 17 points, helping Toronto build its lead up to double digits.

This is now the 14th game this postseason that he’s gone for 30+, and, barring a major collapse, is probably now a lock to take home Finals MVP, should the Raptors close it out.

Kawhi Gets Support by Committee

Even if injuries weren’t hampering Golden State, Masai Ujiri and the Toronto front office has put together a team that runs up to nine players deep. That’s nine players that, no matter who’s on the floor, provide the same level of competition and, most importantly, defense for the full 48 minutes.

Since falling behind 0-2 to the Bucks in the East Finals, this is a team that has had just about everyone put up their biggest game of the season in crucial moments.

After Kyle Lowry and Danny Green came to life in Game 3, Friday night saw Serge Ibaka break through for his best game of the playoffs, making hay in the paint en route to 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting in a tidy 21 minutes of work. Pascal Siakam put together his second straight strong Finals game, chipping in 19 points.

But credit the system and the way the players are working it: against Golden State, the Raptors can get any shot they want, if they have the patience to move the ball and mine those good looks. In the second half, Toronto shot 50% from the field and a blistering 53.3% from deep.

Warriors Offense Dries Up

This is the first time the Warriors dynasty has looked this bad. After Friday’s loss in Game 4, it looks like Toronto has the clamps on their main arteries and are gripping tight. Golden State’s offense is ranked tops in almost every major offensive category in the playoffs, yet it’s bending to Toronto’s highly destructive defense that surrenders just 100.5 points a game.

Even with Klay Thompson returning, and combining with backcourt mate Steph Curry for 55 points, the Warriors were limited to just 92 points. The question that the Warriors face every time they take the court now is where are the points going to come from?

Minus Kevin Durant (who, if he’s not ready now likely won’t be for this series) and a severely out of shape DeMarcus Cousins, there is not enough punch to support the Splash Brothers.

Does Curry Have Anything Left in the Tank?

Saving Klay for Game 4 may have kept Thompson healthy and available for the rest of the series, but did it come at the cost of Steph Curry’s will? After dropping 47 points in a tank-emptying performance in Game 3, Curry looked gassed with the one day of rest in between.

He’s had shooting slumps before, but for the first time ever, the greatest shooter in NBA history looked to be firing up three-pointers with a noticeable hitch. And even as he’s been averaging 32.5 points a game for the series, the Raptors are using a steady diet of Lowry, Fred VanVleet and Danny Green to physically work him over, with Siakam and Kawhi lurking to offer support.
