The red-hot Phoenix Suns (35-37, 23-13 home) host the reigning champion Boston Celtics (53-19, 29-7 away) tonight. I’m betting the Suns stay hot, but online sportsbooks have made Boston the favorites in the NBA odds.

Phoenix is looking to extend their four-game winning streak, while Boston aims for their seventh straight victory. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm PT / 10:00 pm ET from Footprint Center in Phoenix, AZ, with ESPN providing the coverage.

The Celtics are currently favored by 3.5-points and -158 on the moneyline. The total sits at 223.5, with the Suns coming back as +134 underdogs.

Per the NBA public betting trends, 60% of bets and 64% of the money are on the Celtics to cover the spread. The over/under opened at 226.5, but has been bet down by 3 points, with 81% of bets and 81% of the money on the over.

My favorite prediction for this contest is the Suns +3.5. Phoenix is surging at exactly the right time, winning their last four games including impressive victories over Milwaukee and Cleveland. Meanwhile, Boston will likely be without Jayson Tatum, who’s doubtful with an ankle injury suffered against Sacramento.

The Suns have been excellent at home lately, going 6-0 straight up in their last six at Footprint Center. They’ve also gone 4-1-1 against the spread during this home stretch. Phoenix has powerful motivation as they’re currently locked in a tight race for play-in tournament positioning in the Western Conference, sitting in the 10th seed.

While Boston has gone 5-1 without Tatum this season, those wins have come against weaker competition. The Celtics are on a grueling road trip, playing their fourth game in six days, which puts them at a distinct scheduling disadvantage against a rested Suns squad finishing a five-game homestand.

Kevin Durant has been on an absolute tear, averaging 35.3 points over his last three games, including a 38-point explosion against the Bucks. KD has historically performed well against the Celtics, averaging 26.5 points per game against them throughout his career and 30.8 PPG since 2020.

Phoenix’s defense has also stepped up lately, allowing just 107 points per game over their last five contests. They’ve dominated the rebounding battle with a +10 rebound differential during this stretch. The Suns’ shooting has been efficient too, connecting on 38.9% of their three-point attempts and an excellent 90.2% from the free-throw line.

The Celtics may be the better team overall, but with Tatum likely sidelined, their secure playoff position giving them little incentive to push too hard, and the challenging schedule spot, the Suns are in prime position to at least keep this one close and cover the spread.

  • BOS vs PHX Player Prop pick: Kevin Durant Over 25.5 points (-106)

My favorite player prop for this matchup is Kevin Durant over 25.5 points. KD has been absolutely on fire lately, pouring in 38 points in each of his last two games. He’s averaged 35.3 points across his last three outings and has scored 26 or more in 33 of his 59 games this season (55.9%).

Durant has always performed well against the Celtics, averaging 26.5 points per game against them throughout his career. That number jumps to 30.8 PPG in matchups since 2020. With Tatum likely out, Boston will struggle to match Durant’s size and skills on the defensive end.

The sharpshooting forward is also much more productive at home, averaging 28 points at Footprint Center compared to just 25.5 on the road. With Phoenix in desperate need of a win to solidify their play-in tournament chances, expect Durant to continue his aggressive scoring approach to lead the Suns.

  • BOS vs PHX Player Prop pick: Devin Booker Over 6.5 assists (-140)

Booker has developed into an excellent facilitator this season, averaging a career-high 7.1 assists per game. He’s been even more effective lately, dishing out at least seven assists in 13 of his last 18 appearances. Over his last six games, Booker has been even better at getting teammates involved, averaging a whopping 9.8 assists.

With the Celtics likely focusing much of their defensive attention on containing Booker’s scoring, he should have plenty of opportunities to find open teammates. Considering his recent tear and season-long consistency in the assists department, the over on 6.5 assists is strong value.
