  • The Orlando Magic are 7-point favorites over the Celtics tonight
  • The point spread has swung 10 points since opening odds were released

The Boston Celtics (59-20, 33-7 away) are locked into the second seed in the East. However, they can still make history tonight by setting an NBA record with their 34th road win in Orlando. Unfortunately for Boston fans, I don’t think that’s going to happen. Online sportsbooks agree, pegging the Magic (39-40, 21-19 home) as big chalk in the NBA odds. Tip-off is set for 7:10pm ET at the KIA Center, in Orlando, FL.

Orlando is currently favored by 7-points and is -265 on the moneyline. The total sits at 206, with the Celtics coming back as +215 underdogs. Per the NBA public betting trends, the spread looks nothing like it did when opening odds were released. Boston opened as 3-point chalk, but the line was swung drastically in the Magic’s favor based on the assumption that the Celtics are set to rest the bulk of their key players.

Boston Celtics vs Orlando Magic Picks

  • Orlando Magic -7 (-110) at Caesars

Here’s what we know as of Noon ET. It’s literally anyone’s guess who suits up for Boston tonight. That’s a direct quote from Jay King, one of their beat writers. The Celtics have nothing to play for, aside from a meaningless road victories record, and are nursing injuries.

Al Hortford remains out with a knee injury, while Jaylen Brown left last night’s OT win in New York early due to a nagging injury of his own. Jayson Tatum and Kristaps Prozingis each logged 40+ minutes versus the Knicks, as did Derrick White. Given the insignificance of this game, it’s unlikely any of those players dress tonight. Brown will almost surely sit, as his teammates have been begging him to rest for the final few games so his knee can heal.

Given the line movement, online sportsbooks don’t expect many of Boston’s starters to play. That’s even more evident by the fact that no Celtics player props lines are currently posted.

As for the Magic, there’s plenty to play for tonight. Orlando can clinch the 7th seed with a win, ensuring a home game for the Play-In Tournament. They earned a victory as well last night versus the Hawks, who they’re likely to meet in the 7 vs 8 Play-In game.

NBA Play-In Tournament Seeds

Team (Seed)RecordGames Remaining
Orlando Magic (7)39-403
Atlanta Hawks (8)37-423
Chicago Bulls (9)36-433
Miami Heat (10)36-433

Orlando will have all hands on deck, and is riding a three-game winning streak. They’ve won seven of nine overall, fueled by the number one scoring defense in the league. The Magic lead the NBA in that category, and in opponent assists and made threes. They rank seventh in steals and 10th in enemy field goal percentage.

I expect them to clamp down on Boston’s reserves, while leaning on Paolo Banchero and Franz Wager at the offensive end. The duo combined for 55 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists last night, and should feast against the Celtics second and third stringers.

NBA props from DraftKings Sportsbook on April 9.

Switching over to the player props market, where I’m betting under 8.5 rebounds for Wendell Carter Jr. The 25-year-old has missed this mark in five of his last six games, and is likely in line for reduced playing time in a potential blowout.

With the Magic favored by 7 points, and potentially even more when the injury news settles, all of Orlando’s starters could see less minutes. They’re expected to be well out in front of Boston, and there’s no need to play their starters into the ground given they all logged north of 35 minutes last night. Even with a full allotment on minutes, Carter would be hard pressed to exceed 8.5 boards. Throw in the blowout risk, and it’s an easy under.
