Can Spann Continue His Rise?
Anthony Smith struggled after losing to Jon Jones for the light heavyweight belt, but after a few losses, he has fought below him in the ranks and is now on a winning streak. Ryan Spann, meanwhile, will headline his first UFC main event and gets a shot to enter the top-10 light heavyweight.
Smith & Spann Recent Fights
Jimmy Crute, win by TKO | Fight 1 | Misha Cirkunov, win by TKO |
Devin Clark, win by submission | Fight 2 | Johnny Walker, loss by TKO |
Aleksandar Rakic, loss by decision | Fight 3 | Sam Alvey, win by split decision |
Glover Teixeira, loss by TKO | Fight 4 | Devin Clark, win by submission |
This is a very intriguing matchup due to the fact Spann has not fought in a UFC main event before but he has gone five rounds on the regional scene before, but that was when he was a middleweight and he lost. However, since moving up to light heavyweight, Spann has been a force and has legit one-punch KO power with underrated grappling.
Smith, meanwhile, has proven to have the cardio to go five hard rounds and has a very durable chin to take Spann’s best shots. “Lionheart” also knows how to grind out a fight by mixing in his wrestling and striking to control a fight. He’s also someone who can never be counted out as he has drops the first two rounds and then comes on late and gets the win.
Smith & Spann Stats
33 | Age | 30 |
6’4″ | Height | 6’5″ |
76″ | Reach | 81.5″ |
9 | UFC Finishes | 3 |
I expect Spann to come out aggressive and look to finish Smith early as the longer the fight goes, the better for Smith. Yet, “Lionheart” is known to start slow and does still get hit, as Smith absorbs 4.36 significant strikes per minute, which is fairly high. In the first round, Spann will likely land a big blow that appears to stun Smith but he will be able to use his wrestling and clinch and start to slow the fight down.
Ultimately, I do think this fight gets out of the first two rounds with Spann likely winning both by landing the bigger shits but as he starts to slow down, Smith will then start picking up the volume. Once that happens, Smith will start landing combinations that will hurt Spann, and Lionheart will get a third or fourth-round TKO.
Pick: Anthony Smith (-165)
Will Cutelaba Return to the Win Column?
Ion Cutelaba is a fan-favorite due to his wild style as he comes out strong in the first round and either gets the KO or gets finished later on in the fight. Devin Clark, meanwhile, is the main training partner of Jon Jones and is looking for his first UFC stoppage win.
Cutelaba & Clark Recent Fights
Dustin Jacoby, draw | Fight 1 | Anthony Smith, loss by submission |
Magomed Ankalaev, loss by KO | Fight 2 | Alonzo Menifield, win by decision |
Magomed Ankalaev, loss by TKO | Fight 3 | Dequan Townsen, win by decision |
Khalil Rountree, win by TKO | Fight 4 | Ryan Spann, loss by submission |
Cutelaba has a very similar style to Alonzo Menfiield and Darko Stosic who have legit one-punch KO power while Stosic is wild and comes out aggressive, which Cutelaba does. Clark handled those fights well and got out of the first round and used his wrestling to grind out a decision win.
Although Clark doesn’t have a stoppage win in the UFC, he nearly TKO’d Aleksandar Rakic at UFC 231 and really has put Rakic in the most trouble out of anyone. In this fight, however, I do think Cutelaba will come out aggressive but won’t get Clark out of there, and he will then use his wrestling to grind out a decision victory.
Pick: Devin Clark (+120)
Other UFC Vegas 37 Picks:
- Ariane Lipski (-120): Lipski is the better striker and will be able to keep it standing and piece up Bohm for the decision win.
- Arman Tsarukyan (-760): Tsarukyan is as legit as they come, and he will be able to out grapple Giagos likely for a decision victory, but a submission is very possible.
- Joaquin Buckley (-210): Buckley has the most viral KO in UFC history but is coming off a vicious KO. Against Arroyo, he’ll likely add to the highlight-reel with a KO win.
