It’s a rematch of the 2022 ALDS on Monday as the New York Yankees (6-3, 2-1 away) head to Ohio for a three-game set with the Cleveland Guardians (6-4, 1-2 home) at Progressive Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:10 PM ET. Read on for an analysis of the Yankees vs Guardians.

The Yanks just took two out of three from a divisional rival in the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards, moving them to three games above .500. As for the Guardians, they won the rubber match against the Seattle Mariners Sunday by a score of 7-6 in 12 innings.

Cleveland is actually the -152 moneyline favorite here, much in part to who is on the mound. Shane Beiber takes the ball. NY comes back at +128 with Domingo German getting the start. The total is set at a relatively low 7.5. The Bronx Bombers of course eliminated the Guardians in five games last fall in the divisional round.

New York vs Cleveland Probable Pitchers

German had a very rough first start of 2023 on Tuesday, allowing four earned runs across 4.1 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. While the righty did strike out eight, he also gave up two home runs.

On a more positive note, German was effective last year in 15 appearances (14 starts), compiling a 3.61 ERA and a 2-5 record. He owns a 4.91 career ERA against the Guardians in four outings.

By no surprise, Bieber has been phenomenal so far. While he’s currently an AL Cy Young odds longshot at +2400, the right-hander could very well find himself in the conversation at the season’s end if he keeps pitching like this. Bieber has a 2.25 ERA in two starts, surrendering just three runs while striking out 10.

Last time out, the 27-year-old gave up those three runs to the Oakland Athletics across six innings on three hits. However, Bieber doesn’t typically dominate when he faces the Yankees. In three career appearances, Bieber has a 5.74 ERA.

New York handled the young and exciting Orioles, outscoring them 9-4 across the last two games. Sunday was a 5-3 win behind a stellar outing from Nestor Cortes, who went 5.1 frames and allowed only two runs.

At the plate, Aaron Judge was red-hot. The reigning AL MVP was 3 for 4 with two dingers, taking his HR total to four already. Anthony Rizzo also had a pair of knocks.

Guardians Will Need to Give Bieber Run Support

As you can see above, Bieber tends to give up runs when he pitches against the Yankees. That means the Cleveland lineup must also do their own damage versus German. Scoring seven runs on Sunday against Seattle is a good sign of what’s to come.

The Guardians rallied in the bottom of the 12th to score twice, with rookie Will Brennan coming up clutch on two occasions throughout the contest. He finished the day 2 for 5 with three RBI. Leadoff hitter Steven Kwan was also 2 for 4.

Neither starter thrives in this particular matchup, which is why I think we could see a fair share of runs scored on Monday. The over 7.5 looks like the best pick.
