Chicago is going with right-hander Lucas Giolito here, who will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 campaign. As for the ‘Stros, they send Jose Urquidy to the bump.

Chicago vs Houston Probable Pitchers
Giolito reinvented himself from 2019 to 2021 but last season, the hard-throwing righty struggled. While he did have an 11-9 record, Giolito posted a 4.90 ERA in 30 starts and allowed 3.4 walks per nine innings.

On a more positive note, the former first-round pick did overpower batters at times, striking out 177 in 161.2 innings. That being said, the Astros are an opponent who absolutely hit him around the ballpark in 22′. Giolito had a 16.88 ERA against them in two outings, surrendering 15 earned runs in just eight frames. He boasts an ERA of over six versus Houston, too.
Giolito vs Urquidy 2022 Stats
11-9 | Record | 13-8 |
4.90 | ERA | 3.94 |
161.2 | Innings Pitched | 164.1 |
177 | Strikeouts | 134 |
61 | Walks | 38 |
Urquidy has been the definition of consistency since coming into the big leagues and last year was no different. The Mazatlan, Mexico native compiled a 13-9 record to go along with a 3.94 ERA in 29 appearances, including 28 starts.

The biggest issue for him is the long ball. He allowed 29 homers, which ranked seventh-most in the MLB. Urquidy only faced the White Sox once last season but did very well, holding them to a single run across 7.2 innings.
White Sox Struggle to Produce
Chicago has been swinging the bats very well through these first two games of the year, clubbing a total of 21 hits. However, they’re leaving far too many runners on base.
The White Sox stranded nine on Friday in a 6-3 loss, also striking out 11 times in total. The offensive talent is there, it simply comes down to capitalizing on their opportunities. On the mound, Lance Lynn tossed 5.2 innings of two-run baseball but as you can see, didn’t get much run support.
Houston’s Bats Wake up
Without Jose Altuve, other stars throughout the Astros lineup must step up. And although Houston only registered seven hits in Game 2 of this series, many of them were timely. AL MVP odds contender Yordan Alvarez clubbed a clutch three-run double in the seventh inning to break things open, while Kyle Tucker also smacked his first home run of 2023.
Cristian Javier lasted five innings, surrendering three earned on eight hits while striking out six. He pounded the strike zone as per usual, giving up just one free pass.

White Sox vs Astros Prediction
Even though Giolito was lights out in Spring Training, it’s difficult to look past his atrocious track record against Houston. That’s why I’m taking the Astros to get to him early and ultimately grab another win.
Pick: Astros moneyline -150
