Struggling all season long, the Tigers tried something different with Joey Wentz in his last outing, bringing him out of the bullpen to work as the long man, after one inning from their “opener” last week.

The change might’ve been good for Wentz who allowed two earned runs in four and one-third innings of work. In his first full season in the majors, things have been pretty ugly for the southpaw, regardless of the MLB starting lineups he faces.

He sports a hideous 7.23 ERA on the season and hasn’t managed to pitch at least five complete innings in any of his last five starts. During that span, opponents have averaged more than two hits per inning against Wentz, a ridiculous amount of knocks in a short period of time.

This will be a bullpen game for the Twins with Jose De Leon getting the ball first and Brent Headrick expected to follow and do a lot of the heavy lifting. De Leon has gotten touched up in his last two appearances, allowing three runs in just two and a third, however prior to that he went six straight games without allowing an earned run.

Having spent the last couple of months in the minors, Headrick will likely see his first big league action since late April.
