The Cincinnati Reds (3-3, 0-1 road) and Philadelphia Phillies (2-5, 1-0 home) continue a four-game set on Saturday at Citizens Bank Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM ET. The opener was supposed to be played Thursday but due to weather, had to be played Friday. Philly won 5-2.

It’s Nick Lodolo who will get the ball for the Reds here after his solid season debut last week. As for the struggling Phils, they send Bailey Falter to the bump.

This game can be seen on NBCS Philly and Bally Sports Ohio.

Reds vs Phillies Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Cincinnati Reds +135 +1.5 (-155) Ov 8 (-105)
Philadelphia Phillies -155 -1.5 (+135) Un 8 (-115)

Despite Philly’s bad start, it’s not surprising to see them as a -155 favorite Saturday. After all, they’ve won five in a row against Cincinnati, covering the runline in all of those matchups.

Cincinnati vs Philadelphia Starting Pitchers

Lodolo was really impressive in his rookie season in 2022 after breaking the big league roster. The former TCU standout went 4-7 with a 3.66 ERA in 19 starts, striking out 131 in 103.1 innings while walking 39.

The 25-year-old picked up where he left off last Saturday, carving up the Pirates. Lodolo sat down nine Bucs via the strikeout, going five innings and surrendering just two earned runs. He actually handled this Phillies lineup quite well last year as well, compiling a 2.92 ERA in two outings.

Lodolo vs Falter Stats

VS
Bailey Falter
1-0 Record 0-1
3.60 ERA 3.38
5.0 Innings Pitched 5.1
9 Strikeouts 3
2 Walks 0

Falter put together a quality first start on Sunday in Texas, he just didn’t get any offensive support. The southpaw tossed 5.1 innings of two-run baseball, giving up seven hits and striking out three. Falter didn’t allow a single walk and did a good job of pounding the strike zone.

The 25-year-old has made two career appearances against the Reds, both out of the bullpen. He owns a 1.59 ERA, striking out eight in 5.2 frames. This will be his first start at home in 2023.

Phillies Finally Win a Game

Philadelphia is off to a brutal 2-5 start and while the offense is stringing together hits, they’re struggling immensely to score runs, averaging just three per game. On the mound, it’s been even worse. The Phillies own a 6.98 ERA as a staff. Yikes.

On a more positive note, manager Rob Thomson got a strong outing from Zack Wheeler Friday, who tossed five innings and allowed just two runs. The bullpen proceeded to dominate as well, with Craig Kimbrel notching his first save. At the dish, JT Realmuto and Nicholas Castellanos both whacked two hits apiece, with Realmuto going deep.

Reds vs Phillies Prediction

No one is expecting the Reds to do much in the NL Central in 23′, but their bats are actually producing early on, aside from Friday. Cincy is batting .261 as a group and scoring five runs per contest, which ranks 12th in the Majors.

Jonathan India and Tyler Stephenson are both slashing over .365, with India evidently poised for a bounce-back campaign. They were held to just six knocks in the series opener though, with Wheeler putting in work. Hunter Greene meanwhile went 4.2 innings and gave up just two runs before exiting.

I really like how Lodolo throws the ball. Along with Cincy’s bats, I think he at least gives the Reds a chance to stay in this ballgame.

Pick: Reds +1.5 (-155)
