Boston vs New York (AL) Probable Pitchers

Drafted by the Bronx Bombers back in 2017, Garrett Whitlock makes his first career start at Yankee Stadium in this one. He is just a couple weeks removed from coming off the injured list with an elbow injury that forced him to miss over a month of action.

In five starts this campaign, he’s lasted more than five innings just once. With a middling bullpen, the Red Sox are hoping the 26-year old can stretch out his starts a little more. The righty battled against the division leading Rays last week, but his defense let him down as he left after surrendering four runs in four and two-thirds.

At least he’ll be able to avoid the most fearsome bat in any of the MLB starting lineups, as Aaron Judge is on the injured list with a toe sprain and won’t be available for this series.

Even after giving up five earned in back-to-back outings to close out the month of May, Gerrit Cole is still one of the top contenders in the Cy Young odds this season, sporting a perfect 7-0 record and 2.82 ERA so far.

He may not be excited about facing the Red Sox though. Out of the 15 teams he has made at least 15 starts against in his career, no team has hit more homers or scored more runs against the Cole Train than Boston.

On top of that, it looks like he’ll be going against a side that may be more motivated than usual to do damage in the teams first meeting of the season after his teammate, Nestor Cortes, threw some shade at the Red Sox earlier this week. Funny enough, Cortes is out with an injury and won’t have to deal with Boston.

Although Cortes might not think so, it’s always exciting when the Red Sox and Yanks hook up. The Yankees have owned the rivalry of late, taking the last six contests between the two last season, including a four game sweep at Yankee Stadium in late September.

However, I don’t know if it was smart for Cortes to add fuel to the fire. It’s not wise to underestimate the pride of this Red Sox organization, especially at this early juncture of the year. In every game when they faced Cole last season, the score went over the projected run total in the MLB odds.
