Saturday afternoon brings some American League East action in the Bronx as the MLB-best Tampa Bay Rays (30-9, 11-6 away) and New York Yankees (21-18, 14-9 home) battle it out in the second game of a four-game set. The first pitch is set for 1:05 PM ET at Yankee Stadium. Read on for an analysis of the Rays vs Yankees.
The Rays will have their ace on the mound here in Shane McClanahan, who has yet to lose this season. As for the Yanks, they send Nestor Cortes to the hill.

Tampa Bay vs New York Probable Pitchers
McClanahan is absolutely rolling in 2023, just like last year. The southpaw is a stellar 7-0 with a mind-boggling 1.76 ERA, which is third in the entire Majors. McClanahan is also a contender in the AL Cy Young odds.

The 26-year-old carved up the Orioles on May 8th, tossing six innings of scoreless baseball, striking out seven in the process. He’s racked up 58 K’s in 46 innings this season but has issued 20 free passes. That will be an area he’ll want to improve. McClanahan has a 3.26 ERA lifetime against the Yankees.
McClanahan vs Cortes Stats
7-0 | Record | 3-2 |
1.76 | ERA | 4.74 |
46 | Innings Pitched | 38 |
58 | Strikeouts | 39 |
20 | Walks | 11 |
Cortes isn’t looking as dominant as 2022 thus far. The lefty owns a 3-2 record and 4.74 ERA in seven starts, striking out 39 against 11 walks. To be honest, it was pretty much one brutal outing that skyrocketed his ERA, allowing seven earned runs at the end of April against the Rangers.
The 28-year-old actually looked good in his most recent start though, surrendering just two runs in five frames to the Athletics. He also struck out four. Cortes has compiled a 3.74 ERA versus Tampa Bay in his big league career.

Rays Are Thriving
Tampa Bay is truly flourishing in every category imaginable. They’re first in basically every important offensive area, including runs scored, home runs, average, and slugging. On the mound, the staff owns a 2.92 ERA.
However, the Rays just lost starter Drew Rasmussen to the 60-day IL, which is a devastating blow. Nevertheless, there are enough other arms that are capable of stepping up for the time being.
Yankees Have Tough Stretch Ahead
Despite being 21-18, the Yanks are fifth in the uber-competitive AL East. Plus, they will clash with the Toronto Blue Jays after this Rays series concludes. Needless to say, a difficult stretch ahead.
New York finally has Aaron Judge back but Giancarlo Stanton remains out. Their offense is severely struggling, slashing just .232 as a lineup while scoring 4.4 runs per night. Their staff is actually faring well though, collecting a 3.68 ERA.
Rays vs Yankees Prediction
I simply cannot bet against McClanahan. He’s too dominant. Take the Rays moneyline.
Pick: Rays moneyline -130.
