Tampa sends lefty Josh Fleming to the hill for this afternoon contest, while the Sox counter with Tanner Houck.

Tampa Bay vs Boston Probable Pitchers
Fleming is typically a reliever for the Rays, making 11 appearances in total but just three starts. He’s posted a 1-0 record and 4.62 ERA, striking out 24 in 48.2 innings and walking 17. While the southpaw actually did get the start on May 28th against Dodgers, he was absolutely lit up.
LA ragged him for 10 runs (eight earned) in six innings of work, including five home runs. Frankly, it’s surprising he even lasted that long. On a more positive not, Fleming hasn’t allowed a run to the Red Sox in four innings this season and also owns an ERA of 3.93 on the road.
Fleming vs Houck Stats
1-0 | Record | 3-4 |
4.62 | ERA | 5.30 |
48.2 | Innings Pitched | 52.2 |
24 | Strikeouts | 50 |
17 | Walks | 17 |
Houck is having a pretty rough campaign for the Red Sox. His 3-4 record and 5.30 ERA speaks for itself in 10 starts. The right-hander has struck out nearly one hitter per inning, but he’s just getting squared up far too often.

The 26-year-old has given up at least three earned runs in six of his last seven outings. In his most recent start, Houck allowed four earned across four frames against the Diamondbacks, who also took him deep twice. He’s yet to face the Rays in 2023 but has a 3.52 ERA against them.

Tampa is Dominating Boston
The Rays truly have Boston’s number in recent memory, sweeping them in April in a four-game set. In fact, they’ve won eight of the last 11 against their divisional rivals.
There's no secret, these guys are just really good.

Kevin Cash’s squad comes into the series opener having dropped two of three to the Cubbies where their electrifying offense actually struggled, scoring just five runs across three contests. That’s unheard of for Tampa and it wouldn’t be surprising to see them bounce back Saturday.
Red Sox Struggling
This has been a real up-and-down season for Boston. That’s continued as of late, winning only three of their previous 10 outings. The Red Sox just lost two of three to the Cincinnati Reds and it won’t get any easier against the Rays.
Offense is the clear bright spot for this ball club, ranking top-five in numerous categories. However, their pitching is wildly inconsistent, compiling a 4.65 ERA, which ranks 25th in the big leagues.
Rays vs Red Sox Picks
Tampa’s offense is just destined to break out. That being said, I like the Rays moneyline here.
Pick: Rays moneyline +100
