The slumping San Diego Padres (24-29, 12-14 away) head from New York down to South Beach on Tuesday for the beginning of a three-game set with the Miami Marlins (28-26, 14-11 home) at LoanDepot Park. The first pitch for the opener is scheduled for 6:40 pm ET.
The Padres will be hoping Ryan Weathers can help them turn around their fortunes, while the Fish counter with reigning NL Cy Young-winner Sandy Alcantara.

San Diego vs Miami Probable Pitchers
Weathers has pitched in a variety of different roles this season, but he now gets another opportunity to be the Padres’ No. 5 starter after Seth Lugo went on the IL. The lefty is having a respectable campaign, going 1-3 with a 3.94 ERA in seven appearances and five starts. He’s struck out 18 in 29.2 innings while walking 11.
However, Weathers is coming off a pair of rough outings. He surrendered four earned runs to the lowly Nationals on May 24th and prior to that, gave up another four earned to the Dodgers. Unfortunately, he owns an ERA over six against the Marlins, too.
Weathers vs Alcantara Stats
1-3 | Record | 2-5 |
3.94 | ERA | 4.86 |
29.2 | Innings Pitched | 63 |
18 | Strikeouts | 57 |
11 | Walks | 20 |
After such a magnificent season in 2022, it’s been a much different story for Alcantara this year. He’s made 10 starts, compiling a 2-5 record and 4.86 ERA, striking out 57 and walking 20 in 63 frames. The reality is he’s just getting hit around far more often than usual.

That being said, Alcantara collected his second win on May 24th, limiting the Rockies to two earned across six innings. That’s something to build on. Also, he has a stellar 0.96 ERA versus San Diego in three career appearances.
Padres Slumping
Despite having one of the most potent MLB lineups in the bigs on paper, San Diego is seriously underperforming. They rank 29th in average, 24th in runs, and 30th in hits. The likes of Xander Bogaerts, Manny Machado, and Juan Soto are all failing to live up to expectations.
The Padres come into Tuesday with a 4-6 record in their last 10 games and just lost two of three to the Yankees, including a 10-7 defeat in the rubber match Sunday where Yu Darvish got lit up. Considering Alcantara’s dominance of San Diego, this could be another tough one.
Marlins in Good Shape
Miami comes into this series with no shortage of momentum, just sweeping Mike Trout and the Angels over the weekend. In the process, they outscored them 16-7, including a 2-0 win Sunday.

Eury Perez tossed five scoreless innings and surrendered just two hits before the bullpen also entered and completely shut down Los Angeles. The Marlins are now in second in the NL East and just 4.5 games out of first place.
