Two of the National League’s legitimate contenders clash on Friday evening as the San Diego Padres (3-3, 0-0 away) and the Atlanta Braves (5-1, 0-0 home) conclude a four-game set at Truist Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:08 PM ET.
Nick Martinez takes the mound here for the Padres, looking to bounce back from a rather average first start of the season. Rookie Jared Shuster counters for the Braves after making his MLB debut last Sunday.

San Diego vs Atlanta Probable Pitchers
Martinez had a very solid year in 22′, posting a 3.47 ERA in 47 games. While he made just 10 starts, it appears the righty is going to be a part of the rotation moving forward. His first outing last week saw Martinez go seven innings, giving up four earned runs to the Colorado Rockies. He took the loss.
Seven innings apiece from Nick Martinez and Seth Lugo in the Padres' first trip through the rotation. Seems like a nice way to quiet those questions about whether they're better suited for the bullpen.

He’s only faced the Braves twice in his career but hasn’t exactly pitched that well, allowing four earned runs in seven frames and three home runs. This will not be an easy start for Martinez.
Martinez vs Shuster Stats
0-1 | Record | 0-1 |
5.14 | ERA | 7.71 |
7.0 | Innings Pitched | 4.2 |
5 | Strikeouts | 1 |
2 | Walks | 5 |
After a marvelous Spring Training, Shuster earned a spot in the Braves rotation. He held opponents to a mere .115 average in Grapefruit League action and proved he was ready to pitch in the show.
But, the 24-year-old was shaky in his debut, tossing 4.2 innings against the Nationals, surrendering four earned runs, and issuing five free passes. Shuster took the loss. Now, he’s tasked with a Padres lineup brimful with star power. If Shuster struggles to get ahead of hitters again, it could be a very quick outing. The likes of Manny Machado and Juan Soto will punish him.

Padres vs Braves Betting Trends
Despite having so much talent in their lineup, the Padres have yet to really get going offensively. Although it’s only been a handful of games, San Diego ranks 18th in runs scored, 23rd in hits, and 19th in team average at .234.

Offseason acquisition Xander Bogaerts is tearing the cover off the baseball though, slashing .409 with three homers and three doubles. He’s a +3000 longshot in the NL MVP odds. No one on this roster has ever faced Shuster.
Atlanta is certainly living up to expectations so far, sitting at 5-1 prior to Thursday’s contest. Their electric offense is raking with a .284 average as a group while already slugging 10 homers. Matt Olson has three long balls.
On the hill, ace Max Fried went on the IL after leaving his first start early but the rest of the staff has managed to hold it down, producing a 2.38 ERA.
Padres vs Braves Prediction
It’s only a matter of time until the Padres break out at the plate. Friday feels like that time against a young arm who struggled to find the strike zone last weekend. The San Diego moneyline looks good.
Pick: Padres moneyline (+110)
