A six-run second inning powered the San Diego Padres (93-69, 45-36 home) to a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers (98-64, 46-35 away) last night, giving them a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-five series in the process. Just 24 hours later, the Friars will have a chance to close out the series at home at Petco Park. First pitch for Game 4 is slated for 6:08 pm PT/9:08 pm ET.

With Tuesday’s Game 3 victory, the Padres surged from fourth-favorite in the 2024 World Series odds to outright chalk at +300. The Dodgers are now as long as +900 at FanDuel.

San Diego manager Mike Shildt is turning back to Dylan Cease for Game 4. Cease was roughed up for five runs on six hits and two walks over just 3.1 innings in a 7-5 loss in Game 1.

His last start of the regular season also came against LA on Sep. 25, when he surrendered another three runs on five hits and three walks over 5.0 innings. He did manage nine strikeouts in 8.1 innings over the two starts.

Cease’s last postseason action came in 2021 with the White Sox, when he was tagged for three runs on two hits and three walks in just 1.2 innings against the Astros.

LA manager Dave Roberts is taking a different tack. Instead of sending Game 1 starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the mound, the Dodgers will go with a bullpen game. Crucially, Game 3 starter Walker Buehler was able to soldier on after his disastrous second inning and give the Dodgers five full innings of work last night.

Roberts used three relievers to cover the final three innings: Anthony Banda (1.1 IP), Daniel Hudson (0.2 IP), and Michael Kopech (1.0 IP). The teams were off on Monday, meaning LA’s pen is in good shape for Wednesday’s game.

Dodgers vs Padres Game 4 Prediction

I don’t have a ton of faith in Cease heading into Game 4. He’s a better pitcher than what he showed in Game 1, but several of these Dodger hitters seem to have his number. That includes soon-to-be NL MVP Shohei Ohtani, who’s crushed three homers off Cease in just 17 ABs. Ohtani holds a 1.251 OPS against the Padres righty, while Gavin Lux (1.381 OPS in seven ABs), Kike Hernandez (1.250 OPS in 12 ABs), and Freddie Freeman (1.000 OPS in 11 ABs) have also hit him hard.

That being said, I still like the Padres to close out the series tonight. Fernando Tatis Jr is the hottest player in baseball right now, with a .556 average and four homers already in the postseason. And San Diego’s red-hot play post-All Star break clearly hasn’t cooled off.

While LA’s pen may be fairly fresh, it’s not particularly good. The Dodgers finished the regular season with a 4.03 FIP and 4.21 xFIP from its bullpen, which ranked 21st and 23rd, respectively.

LAD vs SDP Picks:

  • Padres moneyline (-132) at FanDuel
  • Over 7.5 runs (-125) at ESPN Bet
  • Tatis over 0.5 RBI (+150) at FanDuel
