The Arizona Diamondbacks (45-30, 22-12 away) will head to the nation’s capital on Thursday for a makeup game with the Washington Nationals (28-45, 13-26 home) at Nationals Park. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm ET. This contest was supposed to be played on June 8th but it was rained out.
The D-Backs will send Tommy Henry to the mound here on the road while DC counters with rookie Jake Irvin.

Arizona vs Washington Probable Starters
The Diamondbacks have two top-tier starters in Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly. Henry meanwhile hasn’t been great in 2023, but he’s putting up respectable numbers. The 25-year-old is 3-1 with a 4.66 ERA in 11 outings (10 starts), striking out 36 in 56 innings and issuing 22 free passes. The home run ball is a problem for him, giving up 10 bombs.
Tommy Henry struggled, but controlled the damage enough to get through 6 2-run innings.
Jake and Gurriel got going for a 3 home run inning off of Bieber.
Corbin Carroll.
Bullpen held up, but mainly because of Scott McGough's heroics once again.

That being said, Henry did bounce back last time out after giving up 10 earned runs across his previous two appearances. He held the Guardians to two earned in six innings. It turned out to be a no-decision, but Henry kept his ball club in the game. The lefty did surrender five earned runs to the Nationals on June 6th, though.
Henry vs Irvin Stats
3-1 | Record | 1-3 |
4.66 | ERA | 5.25 |
56 | Innings Pitched | 36 |
36 | Strikeouts | 27 |
22 | Walks | 22 |
Irvin isn’t having the best rookie campaign. In eight starts, he owns an abysmal 5.25 ERA and a 1-3 record in 36 frames. The strikeout to walk numbers are also very concerning as you can see above. He’s not generating many swings and misses and opposing lineups are just hitting him around.
However, Irvin has something to build on. He contained Luis Arraez and the Marlins on June 17th to one run on four hits in five innings of work, allowing just two free passes and striking out four. Irvin also pitched against Arizona just over two weeks ago, lasting four innings after surrendering four runs, with three of them being earned.
Diamondbacks Are for Real
Arizona is just 5-5 in their last 10 games, but that shouldn’t hide the fact that the D-Backs are playing phenomenal baseball in 23′. In one of the most difficult divisions in the big leagues, they’re in first place with a 45-30 record and are currently three games above the second-place Giants.

Can Arizona sustain its impressive play? That remains to be seen. Nevertheless, it’s worth noticing what this team is doing. Their offense is essentially carrying the load, ranking top five in numerous categories including runs, hits, and average. Rookie Corbin Carroll is the star of the show with a .303 average. He’s even a long shot in the NL MVP odds.
Tough Times in DC
By no surprise to anyone, the Nationals are downright brutal. Dave Martinez’s squad is in the gutter of the NL East and has shown no signs of moving. To make matters worse, Washington is 3-7 in their previous 10 outings.
On a more positive note, they did end a five-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Trevor Williams threw a gem while shortstop CJ Abrams, who DC got in the Juan Soto trade, led the charge at the dish with a 3 for 3 day, including a homer.

Diamondbacks vs Nationals Predictions
Arizona has dominated the Nationals in recent memory and plays well on the road. Plus, Henry gets a ton of run support every time he steps on the hill. Take the Diamondbacks.
Pick: Diamondbacks moneyline (-145)
