Win and you’re in. That’s what’s at stake for anyone in the Valero Texas Open field who’s yet to qualify for next week’s Masters.
That puts a ton of pressure on guys like Rickie Fowler and Matt Kuchar, but for players like Tyrrell Hatton this event is just a tune-up for next week’s festivities.

Speaking of Hatton, he’s the Valero Texas Open favorite, and sports the shortest odds to make the cut at -600, and the longest odds to trunk slam at +350.
Normally, you’d never think about betting the top player in the field to miss the cut, but this week might be the exception.

Fade Tyrell Hatton in Texas
Hatton’s form leading into last week’s matchplay tournament was spectacular. He was a popular outright pick to win the elevated event, but those tickets went up in flames before he even teed off.
Prior to his first match, it was revealed that Hatton was dealing with a wrist injury. The ailment certainly affected his play as he dropped all three of his matches against on paper what looked like one of the softest groups.
Appears Tyrrell Hatton has injured his hand or wrist, shaking it out and stretching it repeatedly on the range and on the way to the first tee. Also looks like he's using Shane Lowry's former caddie, Bo Martin, for today at least. pic.twitter.com/8K204b6pnk

Obviously, if it was a serious issue he wouldn’t be playing this week, but it’s enough of a concern that his make and miss the cut odds are not justified. There’s too much at stake next week for him to try and play through any discomfort. One painful swing and he could just walk off the course.
This tournament means very little in the grand scheme of things for Hatton, and no one should be surprised if he’s gone after two rounds. At +350, I’ll certainly bet on him looking ahead to Augusta instead.
Pick: Tyrrell Hatton to Miss the Cut (+350)
Make the Cut Parlay
As for golfers with plenty to play for this week, we compiled a list of our favorites for our make the cut parlay. The first leg is Cam Davis, who ranks fifth in the field in strokes gained tee-to-green over the last 50 rounds and 11th in scoring.
Matt Wallace is the second leg, fresh off a win last week in Punta Cana. Wallace was seventh the week prior at the Valspar and finished third at this tournament in 2021.
Matt Wallace hit 147 shots @THEPLAYERSChamp en route to missing the cut by one.
He had positive self-talk on just two of those shots.

Next up, let’s add Nick Taylor and Chris Kirk. Taylor is quietly enjoying a fine season, with four top-20’s in eight 2023 starts. Kirk meanwhile, won at Honda last month and has two top-eight results in his past three trips to Texas.
We’ll round it out with the veteran Matt Kuchar, who loves this track. Kuchar has three consecutive top-12 finishes at the Valero Texas Open, and was very impressive at the matchplay event winning his group.
Pick: Make the Cut Parlay (+379)
Taylor Pendrith vs Dylan Wu – Round 1 H2H
Switching gears to the head-to-head market now, where we’re looking to fade Taylor Pendrith. The Canadian ranks 103rd in strokes gained tee-to-green over the past 12 rounds, and 97th in scoring.
Pendrith has lost at least 3.7 strokes to the field in three straight events, missing one cut and finishing 69th and 70th in his other two starts.
Taylor Pendrith vs Dylan Wu – Round 1 H2H
Golfer | Odds |
---|---|
Taylor Pendrith | -130 |
Dylan Wu | +100 |
He’s pitted against Dylan Wu in a round one matchup, and Wu is being criminally undervalued. The 26-year-old is in much better form, and is fresh off a 16th place finish last week in Punta Cana. Wu has gained strokes on the field in six of his last eight starts, ranking 21st in ball striking and top-25 in strokes gained tee-to-green and scoring.
This matchup should be priced closer to -110 on both sides, so we should gladly take the discount on Wu at +100.
Pick: Dylan Wu (+100)
