Midway through Saturday’s round of the Valero Texas Open, Cameron Tringale was in cruise control and looked to be waltzing to a comfortable victory, but he ran into a speed bump. Tringale bogeyed three holes in a row on the back nine which opened the door for Jordan Spieth and Matt Wallace who took full advantage to tie for the lead.

Just two strokes behind them is Charley Hoffman, the 2016 winner of this championship. He shot a blistering 7-under, 65 to jump up the leaderboard, solidifying his chances of winning. He was one of the players we were looking at pre-tournament, and after a rough Thursday he’s battled back into contention.

There are not a lot of golfers close to Spieth and Wallace, with just five players within five strokes of the lead so anyone vying to win from back in the pack will have to shoot a remarkable round on Sunday.

Jordan Spieth Poised For First Win In Four Years

Jordan Spieth has been on the cusp of getting back into the winner’s circle all season, carrying 54 holes leads at the Phoenix Open and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, only to fade on Sunday to fall out of top spot. This go around, Spieth is tied with Matt Wallace and doesn’t have a ton of players close to him on the leaderboard, which lends itself to his best chance at victory.

The world’s best players always insist they want their games to peak for the four majors. No matter what happens tomorrow, it’s hard to argue that Jordan Spieth’s game isn’t trending toward that peak entering next week.

He has come close to sealing the deal at this tournament in the past, settling for a runner-up finish in 2015. He birdied five of his last seven holes on Saturday to race past Cameron Tringale and into the tie for the lead. He’s second in strokes gained tee-to-green, fifth in scrambling and seventh in putts per green in regulation for the championship.

Extremely surprising is that Spieth is tied for 72nd in greens in regulation, hitting just 30 of the first 54 putting surfaces. That would seem to point to a sign of his ball striking being off which would be a concern come Sunday. However, the fact that he’s battling Matt Wallace, who has never been in this position on the PGA Tour would seem to point to him finally getting his long awaited victory after a four year dry spell.

1. Charley Hoffman (+500): We were all over Hoffman coming into the week so why not continue to roll with the tournament’s all time money winner? After an opening 75 he’s followed that up with rounds of 66 and 65 with 14 birdies and an eagle. He’s second in strokes gained off the tee this week and in ten tries at this venue he has eight top-15 finishes, so he’s a horse for this course.
2. Cameron Tringale (+1400): Though he’s never won on the PGA Tour, Cameron Tringale led this event on the back nine Saturday, so these odds are enticing for a player who is playing well. Tied for first in birdies this week with 17, and he’s had T-31 or better finishes in eight of his last ten events, so he’s playing some very solid golf.
