Following Viktor Hovland’s victory at the Valspar Championship to conclude the Florida swing, the PGA Tour heads to the Lone State State for the Texas Children’s Houston Open. Two huge stars are teeing it up in Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, in what will likely be their last tune-up before the Masters in April. The event takes place at the Memorial Park Municipal Golf Course in Houston, Texas, and plays to a par-70. Last year, German Stephan Jaeger held off Scheffler, Tony Finau and three others by one stroke to claim his first career PGA Tour title.

The field is extremely top-heavy with the top-two golfers in the world competing in Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, but most of the other big names opted to stay home. J.J. Spaun, who lost the Players Championship in a playoff to McIlroy, has the third shortest odds to win, along with Sungjae Im.

Tony Finau Loves This Tournament

The last two times this event has been contested, Tony Finau has been in the running both times. In 2022, he came away with a four-stroke victory in a dominant display. Then, he nearly went back-to-back in his title defense, winding up in a tie for second, one shot behind the eventual winner.

In the last twelve rounds at this track, Finau ranks second in total strokes gained, ball striking and tee-to-green. His +4000 odds are quite enticing also, given that eight players have shorter odds than him. It’s not as if his current game is in shambles either, as he was T-5th at the Genesis Invitational three tourneys ago. I don’t love tying up money in the big guns in Scheffler and McIlroy with such short prices, so I’d rather go with Finau who has great vibes at this venue.

Texas Children’s Houston Open 2025 Picks & Value Bets

  1. Jacob Bridgeman +4500: It’s hard to find many golfers hotter than the unheralded Jacob Bridgeman. Followed up a tie for second at the Cognizant Classic with a solid T-15 at Bay Hill and made the cut at the Players Championship. Then he at least co-led in each of the first three rounds at the Valspar, before settling for an excellent third place result. Was T-21st at this tournament in 2024.
  2. Maverick McNealy +5500: In four career starts at this venue, Maverick McNealy has been solid, in unspectacular, with nothing worse than a tie for 27th. He won late in 2024 to get his maiden victory, then nearly won again three starts ago at Torrey Pines, where he wound up runner-up.
  3. Nico Echavarria +15000: A very hit or miss golfer, Colombian Nico Echavarria was in the final group heading into the final round of Sunday’s Valspar Championship before a tough last day. He has two wins to his credit, and nearly made it three with a playoff loss earlier this year in Hawaii.
  4. Nick Dunlap +20000: Despite missing his last two cuts, these odds are too juicy to pass up on the phenom Nick Dunlap. He won twice in his rookie season in 2024 (once as an amateur), and was T-11th at this event last year. Will be interesting to monitor in the top 5/10/20 markets.
