The second tournament of 2022 for the newly named DP World Tour (former European Tour), heads to the United Arab Emirates for the Dubai Desert Classic. Last week, Thomas Pieters took home his second trophy in his last three starts at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and he’s in the field yet again.
There’s plenty of big names competing at Emirates Golf Club, headlined by two-time champion Rory McIlroy, who is the +750 favorite to win for a third time. He’s followed by Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa as top-ten golfers teeing it up. These guys opted to skip the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open, in which Jon Rahm is the favorite.
Going low is imperative for success, with nine of the last ten champions firing at least 16-under-par to earn the title. Paul Casey is defending champion.

Collin Morikawa Looks to Shake Off Poor Start
Heading into last week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Collin Morikawa was on a tear. He had posted five straight top ten finishes, including a runner-up, a pair of T-5’s and a T-7 to go along with his triumph at the DP World Tour Championship Dubai. In doing so, he became the first American ever to win the Race to Dubai.

That he ended up in a rather pedestrian T-62nd position last week was certainly shocking, considering he hadn’t played that poorly in nearly half a year. With his tremendous body of work, which includes two major championships, last week likely will be a blip on the radar.
With his recent showing in Dubai leading to a title, expect a bounce back and at +1000 odds, you’re getting him at slightly better value than both Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland.

2022 Dubai Desert Classic Best Value Picks
- Rafa Cabrera Bello (+4500): Rafa Cabrera Bello is a past champion at this track, winning it in 2012. He also was a runner-up here in 2016. Just last week, he nearly won his fifth DP World Tour title, finishing in second place. Just five starts ago, he won the Spanish Open.
- Nicolai Hojgaard (+6500): The 20-year-old Danish sensation Nicolai Hojgaard, twin brother of Rasmus, has already won on the DP World Tour, taking the 2021 Italian Open. Before his missed cut last week in Abu Dhabi, he was T-2nd and T-4th in his two previous starts, making his +6500 odds intriguing.
- Shubhankar Sharma (+8000): Last weekend, Shubhankar Sharma nearly won his third career DP World Tour title, where he was the runner-up to Thomas Pieters, along with Cabrera Bello. Just three starts before that, he was T-3rd in the Spanish Open, as he’s very much a boom or bust type golfer.
