Collin Morikawa raced out to a five shot lead at the WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession Saturday, and it looked like he was going to potentially cruise to victory. However, after making eight birdies in his first twelve holes, the 2020 PGA Champion stumbled with a pair of bogeys to take a slim two shot edge heading into the final round.

Before the week began, we were high on him as an auto-bet because his odds were +4500 which were disproportionately high given his talent. We also believed in him as a tremendous sleeper selection because of his ball striking.

Should Morikawa not be able to get it across the finish line, there are plenty of luminaries behind him ready to pounce. Such golfers like four-time major champion Brooks Koepka and 2014 FedEx Cup winner Billy Horschel are two back, and major champions Webb Simpson, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Reed lurk further behind.

Morikawa Has Been a Ball Striking Machine

This week, Collin Morikawa has been a savant tee-to-green, where he’s first in that strokes gained category. He’s picked up nearly eleven shots on the field, allowing him to make 23 birdies – most of anyone in the field. After a slow-ish start Thursday where he shot 70, he’s been on fire with rounds of 64 and 67.

Normally putting is his bugaboo, as evidenced by him losing nearly eight shots on the greens last week at Riviera, but this week he’s been solid. He’s T-2nd in greens in regulation, and second in putts per GIR, allowing him to grab a strangle hold on the tournament.

While his odds are +165, don’t be too scared of that, because he’s shown an ability to beat elite fields like the PGA Championship last August. If his putting is even half decent, he’s as tough to beat as anybody, and he has the flat stick working and striking it superbly, making him a good selection.

1. Rory McIlroy (+1100): Starting just four strokes back, Rory McIlroy has made the second most birdies in the tournament. He’s fifth in SG: tee-to-green and fourth in putts per green in regulation. Going low Sunday will be imperative as the chaser, and five of his last seven tour wins he’s shot 66 or better on the final day.
2. Patrick Reed (+1400): Patrick Reed has been in great form, winning the Farmers Insurance Open in his last start on tour. He’s made at least six birdies in each round of this event, and he’s seven in putting this week. All he does is win against elite fields, and he’s won this tournament twice, albeit at two different courses.
