Welcome back old friend! After the gruesome car crash this past February that saw Tiger Woods suffer multiple leg injuries, the 15-time major champion is teeing it up at the PNC Championship.
Many thought we might not see him play golf again, but he’s been ramping up his activity in recent weeks and he’s going to see how he holds up over this two-day event. He’ll be playing with son Charlie for the second time in this championship.
The PNC Championship is a fun two day tournament that sees a flurry of birdies made with fathers and their sons competing. In addition, LPGA world number one Nelly Korda makes her debut with her dad Petr, who won the 1998 Australian Open tennis major.
In order to qualify for this tournament, the elder statesmen must have won a major championship or the Players Championship, and their partner can’t also hold a PGA Tour card. The format is scramble, commonly referred to as best-ball, where each duo hits their tee shots, they select the best one, and that continues throughout the duration of the hole.

Tiger Woods’ Returns to Golf
The sporting world will be glued to the TV Saturday and Sunday watching Tiger Woods back in action for the first time since the car crash. This will be the second straight year he and son Charlie are competing at this hit and giggle event, having finished seventh in 2020.
Although it’s been a long and challenging year, I am very excited to close it out by competing in the @PNCchampionship with my son Charlie. I’m playing as a Dad and couldn’t be more excited and proud.

The younger Woods put on a show last year, dazzling the gallery with his bravado, prodigious drives and swagger. As a junior, he’ll be playing the forward tees, which will be critical for success. That will hopefully be able to put his dad in position to hit wedges into greens, because Tiger likely won’t be operating on full speed as he’s still recuperating.

Realistically, the duo should not be going off with +1000 odds to win, but obviously the name value alone pushes their odds down to at least half of what they should be. Bet against Tiger at your peril, but those odds aren’t enticing enough to expect them to defeat 19 other teams in a birdie fest format like this.
Last Five PNC Championship Winners
Year | Winner |
---|---|
2020 | Justin Thomas & Father |
2019 | Bernhard Langer & Son |
2018 | Davis Love III & Son |
2017 | Angel Cabrera & Son |
2016 | David Duval & Stepson |
PNC Championship Best Value Picks
- Team Furyk (+750): 17-time PGA Tour winner Jim Furyk is no stranger to winning, and he has kept it going on the Champions Tour, winning twice in 2020 and then his first Senior Major this year at the US Open. He and son Tanner finished in the top ten at this event last go around.
- Team Singh (+1400): It is very intriguing to place a wager on the Singh’s, considering eight other teams have shorter odds than them. Last season, they were the runner-ups at this tournament, following a pair of rounds of 60. He and his son Qass have also been runner-ups in 2006 and 2013 at the PNC Championship.
