After a spellbinding PGA Championship that saw Phil Mickelson become the oldest major champion ever, the PGA Tour heads to Colonial Country Club for the Charles Schwab Challenge. Mickelson turned back the clock to capture his second Wanamaker Trophy and six career major title at Kiawah Island. He’s teeing it up this week, and has tasted success at this event, having won it in 2000 and 2008.
Colonial Country Club is known best for being a ball strikers paradise, with more emphasis on accuracy and precision as opposed to a ‘bomb and gauge’ mentality. The longest hitter’s greatest strength off the tee is neutralized at this short and tight track.
Jordan Spieth, who won the 2016 iteration of this championship, is the +1000 favorite to get the job done again. He’s followed by Collin Morikawa, who lost in a playoff last year at this venue, and Justin Thomas.
Daniel Berger is the defending champion, having won this tournament in the first event back following the COVID-19 tour stoppage.

Corey Conners Built for Colonial
If there ever was a player that was perfectly suited to the precision required at Colonial, it’s Corey Conners. This season, he’s fourth in strokes gained approaching the green, ninth in both SG: tee-to-green and off-the-tee and eight in greens in regulation.
In the last 36 rounds, Conners has been putting on a phenomenal display, as evidenced by these stellar ‘strokes gained’ statistics.
Corey Conners’ Strokes Gained Stats In Last 36 Rounds
Ball Striking | Tee-to-Green | Total | Off-the-Tee | Approach | Putting | Short Game |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
2 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 59 | 69 |
He’s also played solidly at this venue in three previous attempts from 2018-20, where he’s been T-8, T-19 and T-31. Combined, he’s third in SG: ball striking, fifth tee-to-green and tenth in total strokes gained in those three years.
Conners comes in playing really solid golf as well, having posted top-25’s in seven of his last eight stroke play events, including four top-8’s in that span. With +2300 odds to win outright, you’re still getting him at respectable price, as he’s showing signs that he’s ready to win his second PGA Tour event.

2021 Charles Schwab Challenge Best Value Picks
- Joaquin Niemann (+3000): Superstar in the making Joaquin Niemann has been as consistent as they come, having made 19 straight cuts. He’s second in scoring average, eight in total strokes gained and tenth off the tee. Niemann has had a pair of runner-ups this year, and was inside the top-10 entering the final round of the PGA. Made the cut in all three tries here, with a T-8 his best in 2018. Sixth in SG: tee-to-green during that span.
- Gary Woodland (+4300): 2019 US Open champ Gary Woodland has seen a resurgence in his game following a rough patch. He’s been inside the top-six in two of his last five starts, and that doesn’t include him being in the top-10 at last week’s PGA Championship entering the final round. Ninth in this tournament last year.
- Kevin Na (+6500): This year’s Sony Open winner has tasted success at this track in the past, having won it in 2019 and he was also fourth in 2018. In the last twelve rounds at Colonial, he’s first in SG: ball striking and approach, second in total strokes gained and twelfth in putting. He’s won four times since 2018 and at these long odds, worth a flier especially given his record around this course.
