The culmination of the FedEx Cup Playoffs with the $15 million dollar prize begins Thursday at the Tour Championship from East Lake Golf Club just outside Atlanta.
This is the third year of the altered FedEx Cup format which sees Patrick Cantlay starting the tournament in the lead by two over Northern Trust winner Tony Finau, with every golfer’s score staggered based on where they’re ranked.
Cantlay was able to head into the finale with the lead after outlasting Bryson DeChambeau in an epic six-hole playoff duel to wrestle the BMW Championship away from the Mad Scientist. Jon Rahm, who will begin the tournament four shots back, is still the betting favorite to win his first career FedEx Cup title.

Bryson DeChambeau Coming In Three Shots Behind
Since this is just the third year of the new FedEx Cup format, it is important to note the starting positions for all golfers competing. Naturally, the top players on the points list will have a better chance of securing victory, as Patrick Cantlay begins at 10-under par, with the 26th-30th ranked golfers starting a full ten strokes behind.
In the first two iterations of this format, Rory McIlroy won in 2019 despite beginning five shots off the lead, and Dustin Johnson secured the 2020 FedEx Cup title as he led entering the week.
2021 Tour Championship Starting Positions
Golfer | Starting Score |
---|---|
Patrick Cantlay | -10 |
Tony Finau | -8 |
Bryson DeChambeau | -7 |
Jon Rahm | -6 |
Cameron Smith | -5 |
J. Thomas/H. English/A. Ancer/J. Spieth/S. Burns | -4 |
C. Morikawa/S. Im/V. Hovland/L. Oosthuizen/D. Johnson | -3 |
R. McIlroy/X. Schauffele/J. Kokrak/K. Na/B. Koepka | -2 |
C. Conners/H. Matsuyama/S. Cink/J. Niemann/S. Scheffler | -1 |
D. Berger/E. Van Rooyen/S. Garcia/B. Horschel/P. Reed | EVEN |
Despite suffering a soul crushing loss in a playoff at the BMW Championship, Bryson DeChambeau was sensational, ranking first in strokes gained off-the-tee, as he picked up over eight strokes on his competitors. He was second in SG: putting, gaining over nine shots on the greens. Just two events before that, he was squarely in contention with the lead in the final round of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
While he hasn’t dominated at this venue in three previous tries (T-7th in 2019 his best showing taking away starting strokes), he is going to be out for blood after failing to secure the title. At +500 odds, you’re getting him at slightly better value than the top-two golfers on the board.

2016 | Rory McIlroy |
2021 Tour Championship Best Value Picks
- Dustin Johnson (+2000): The reigning FedEx Cup champion is Dustin Johnson, and he’s coming off his best finish on Tour (T-6th), since winning the Masters last November. In three of his last five events, DJ has cracked the top-10. He has six career top-10’s at this venue and is second in scoring average on the campaign, which he’ll need to lean heavily on starting seven off the pace.
- Xander Schauffele (+2500): Since he made his first start a victory at East Lake in 2017, Xander Schauffele has been dominant at this track. In addition to that triumph, he was T-2nd last year (with the best score of anyone over 72 holes, taking out of the starting strokes advantage), second in 2019 and T-7th in 2018. The recent Olympic gold medal winner will begin eight shy of leader Cantlay.
- Sam Burns (+4000): Making his debut at the Tour Championship is Sam Burns. He’s posted a trifecta of strong showings, with a runner-up in a playoff at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, an eight place result at last week’s BMW Championship and T-21st at the Northern Trust. He’s third in birdie average for the season, something that will be necessary to close the gap as he starts six strokes adrift.
