An absolutely wild scene occurred upon completion of the third round of the Memorial Tournament on Saturday evening. Jon Rahm had just shot a sizzling 8-under, 64 to open up a six stroke lead to match Tiger Woods for the largest 54-hole advantage ever at this championship. However, upon finishing his day, Rahm was informed he had tested positive for COVID-19, thereby forcing him to withdraw from the tournament.

He was the odds-on favorite to win the event before the week began, and was the massive favorite to win back-to-back Memorial Tournaments. With the Spaniard withdrawing, that’s opened up the tournament to so many more players that previously didn’t have much of a chance. Collin Morikawa, who won at this track last year at the Workday Charity Open and 2019 champion Patrick Cantlay find themselves the co-leaders, three ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Branden Grace.

Even with Rahm bowing out of the championship, there aren’t a ton of players with a realistic chance of winning as just five golfers are within six strokes. Read on to see the updated odds and best bets heading into Sunday’s final round of the Memorial Tournament.

Cantlay Searching for Second Memorial in Three Years

Both Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay went from battling for second place to all of a sudden squarely in the driver’s seat to win, since they’re three shots clear of Scottie Scheffler and Branden Grace. Cantlay won this tournament in 2019 with a spellbinding Sunday round of 64. Of the two at the top, he’s the better putter and has a better final round scoring average.

So many questions right now. Foremost among them: What happens if one of Jon Rahm’s playing partners (or another contender) tests positive tomorrow? Forced to WD after it’s over? Collect the trophy and then quarantine? This was the nightmare scenario we envisioned 16 months ago.

Cantlay is second in strokes gained tee-to-green through three rounds and second in greens in regulation which will give him plenty of birdie opportunities that he can take advantage of. Morikawa has won on this golf course last year at the Workday Charity Open, but the track was set up vastly different than the one for the Memorial Tournament.

It’s a toss up between the two players, but trusting the player who’s more consistent in putting (Morikawa is 180th this season), is the more reliable play, so that points to Cantlay.

Scottie Scheffler (+600): Should the leading pair stumble, Scottie Scheffler could pounce as he’s in a tie for third, and is actually within shouting distance, unlike everyone fifth place and lower. Scheffler is first in putts per green in regulation through three days, second in birdies (18) and sixth in strokes gained tee-to-green.
2. Branden Grace (+800): This year’s Puerto Rico Open winner has been popping on leaderboards more often lately, including the last Sunday he played at the PGA Championship. He, like Scheffler starts Sunday in a tie for third. First in scrambling this week, seventh in greens in regulation, fifth in putting and eight in SG: tee-to-green.
