Louis Oosthuizen wasn’t as dominant as he’d been the first two rounds of the Open Championship, but he was able to do just enough to stake claim to a one shot edge over Collin Morikawa.

Being out in front in major championships has been common place for the South African, as he’s been in top spot in six of his last ten rounds at the grand slam events. He hasn’t been able to close out a major victory, however, since his lone triumph at the 2010 Open, recording six runner-ups since then, including the last two.

Morikawa  is vying to become the first Open champion winner in his debut since Ben Curtis in 2003 (also at Royal St. George’s). He sputtered early on Saturday through six holes, but he played four-under golf the rest of the way to hold second position. 2017 champion Jordan Spieth was tied on the back nine, but costly bogeys in the final two holes have him three back of Oosthuizen.

Morikawa Inching Toward Another Major Title

We were high on 2020 PGA champion Collin Morikawa entering the week with +3500 odds to win outright, and he’s continued his strong play. He looked to be in danger of dropping out of contention early on Saturday as he was 2-over-par through six holes. The 2020 PGA champion rebounded to make four birdies and eight pars in his final twelve holes to get within one of Louis Oosthuizen.

He’s a premier ball striker, ranking first in strokes gained tee-to-green on the campaign, but his putter can be ice cold. This week, he ranks second on the greens in putts per green in regulation of those who made the cut. Morikawa has also been playing lights out, with six straight top-15’s, including top-10’s in the last two majors.

He’ll be up against the formidable Oosthuizen, who continues to put himself in position to win that elusive second major title. With his recent and past history of being unable to close out the event come Sunday, Morikawa’s slightly longer +200 odds are more appealing than Oosthuizen.

1. Jon Rahm (+1600): Last month’s US Open winner Jon Rahm will start five back of the lead and will need a flawless round to capture back-to-back majors. He’s more than capable, ranking tenth in final round scoring average. Of his six PGA Tour wins, four of them have have been with Sunday rounds of 67 or better.
2. Corey Conners (+2700): Corey Conners will begin the last day four behind, which is key, at least historically. The last 31 major champions have all been within four or closer heading into the final round. Conners is a ball striking savant, ranking first in greens in regulation this week. He’s been popping up on major championship leaderboards more recently, with a pair of top-10’s at the Masters the last two years and he was first round leader at this year’s PGA Championship.
