Undefeated Germany (4-0) will look for their second win over France (3-1) in the span of a week when the teams meet in the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics men’s basketball tournament on Thursday, August 8. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 am ET at Accor Arena in Paris.

While France was impressive in its 82-73 upset of heavily favored Canada in Tuesday’s quarterfinals, the unbeaten Germans head into Thursday’s semifinal clash as slight favorites.

With Team USA dominating all-comers so far, neither Germany nor France is given much of a chance in the gold-medal odds but Germany’s odds (+600) remain considerably shorter than France’s (+1000). Team USA was a -600 favorite before their quarterfinal with Brazil even tipped off.

Germany overcame a 21-11 first-quarter deficit against Giannis Antetokounmpo and Greece in the quarterfinals, getting more solid performances from Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner. Schroder had 13 points and a game-high eight assists without committing a single turnover. Wagner had a game-high 18 points, while Daniel Theis had a team-high eight rebounds in just 25 minutes.

France used a huge first-quarter performance (26-13) to oust Canada, stretching the lead to 45-29 by halftime and cruising to an 82=73 win, led by 22 points from Guerschon Yabusele and an unlikely 20 points from Isaia Cordinier of Virtus Bologna. France dominated despite getting just seven points from leading scorer Victor Wembenyama.

Canada pulled within five in the fourth quarter but no closer.

Germany Dominated First Meeting Against France

The group-stage meeting between Germany and France was a thoroughly one-sided affair in favor of the Germans, who emerged with a 85-71 victory. Germany led by six after the first quarter and the lead had ballooned to 21 by halftime. Schroder and Wagner tied with a game-high 26 points apiece while center Theis had eight rebounds and made Wembanya work for his 14 points (5-of-11 shooting).

Despite 12 rebounds from Wemby, Germany finished with a +7 advantage on the boards (36-29) including an 11-9 edge in offensive rebounds.

France vs Germany Picks & Predictions

Germany has looked like the only team that could possibly threaten the USA so far in the tournament. The Germans have been a cut above every team they’ve faced so far and are getting the very best out of both Schroder and Franz Wagner. Their dominant win over France the first time around was a perfect storm of sorts. They shot an electric 45.2% from beyond the arc and managed to win the rebounding battle despite a significant size disadvantage in the post.

The French were inspired in front of their home fans against Canada and I expect a much better effort against the Germans in Thursday’s rematch. But Germany is still being undervalued as just a 2.5-point favorite.

FRA vs GER picks:

  • Germany -2.5 (-110)
  • Over 159.5 (-110)
