- Fnatic have seen their odds to win the 2019 League of Legends World Championship jump from +2000 to +1200 over just a few weeks
- Fnatic got crushed in last year’s finals by Invictus Gaming
- Is Fnatic a bona fide threat to win it all this year?
The League of Legends World Championship is one of the marquee events in the esports scene, and is set to take place in the fall after each region finishes their regular season in their respective regions. It’s a month-long tournament which showcases the best of the best in League of Legends, and since the beginning of the year the odds for who is going to end up claiming the world title have changed drastically.
More recently, Fnatic, have seen a jump in their odds going from +2000 to +1200 over just a few weeks. But why such a big jump for the Europeans? Are they seriously worth taking a look at as a team that could come out on top of the 2019 League of Legends World Championship?

Can Fnatic Become World Champs After Falling Short Last Year?
Last year’s World Championship saw Fnatic, make a run all the way to the finals where they met up with China’s Invictus Gaming, where they got smashed in what ended up being the fastest world finals ever. It was the first time since Season 1 Worlds in 2011 that saw a European team reach the finals, and despite the less than climactic finish for the EU side it seemed that Europe might have finally caught up to the Eastern teams.
Fnatic lost their star mid laner, Caps, to rival EU squad G2, which lead to many hop off the Fnatic hype train.
Even though they didn’t get the result they wanted in finals of the World Championships, expectations were still high for Fnatic coming into the 2019 LEC Spring Split. Though shortly after, Fnatic lost their star mid laner, Caps, to rival EU squad G2, which lead to many hop off the Fnatic hype train and hop right onto the G2 hype train.

They started off the first split of the year miserably with a 3- 7 record just over halfway through the split, before they turned it around and started to look the Fnatic everyone was used to watching. They went on an eight game win streak to close out the split, and looked like they were a serious threat to challenge for the LEC Spring Split title.
In the playoffs they managed to make it through the first two rounds beating out Splyce and Vitality, before losing to Origen and coming up just short of reaching the finals. So despite them not even making the finals of the LEC Spring Split, their odds improved to win the 2019 World Championship, and I think there’s a few key reasons why.

The first reason that their odds jumped is because of the fact G2 just won MSI. They showed that the European teams can finally go head-to-head with the Korean and Chinese teams and not only compete, but actually win. The fact that EU is now being looked at as a serious contender on the world stage could be one reason why they were bumped up so far in the table.
The other reason their odds improved is the fact that they brought in a substitute Jungler. It was one of the weaker parts of Fnatics game during the Spring Split, and bringing in another player to offer different looks may prove to be what Fnatic needs to be pushed back to their 2018 form.
It hasn’t really been made clear if they will be splitting time in the Jungle as of yet, but surely it will be obvious in the first few weeks of the Summer Split.

Now the real question on everyone’s mind, are they worth betting on to win the 2019 World Championship? The simple answer is no.
Fnatic may show that they could challenge for the world title throughout the second split of the year, but considering the jump comes off of them finishing third in the LEC Spring Split, I wouldn’t get too excited. They have a lot of work to do to be put into the conversation of potential champs in 2019, and they will need to get off on the right foot in the LEC Summer Split starting June 7th.
Pick: SKT T1 (+450)
