AVANGAR’S Ascension
Heading into the StarLadder Berlin Major, AVANGAR wasn’t on anyone’s radar. After they squeaked into the Legends Stage with a win over Syman, AVANGAR started to show that this team could compete with the best. They picked up wins over Team Liquid and G2 Esports to make the Challengers Stage, and then got all the way to the grand final by defeating Team Vitality and Renegades.

If this wasn’t enough, AVANGAR backed up their StarLadder performance by winning BLAST Pro Series Moscow. Following wins over ENCE, Na’Vi and MIBR, they toppled Forze in the finals.

Now this team has had time to build off their confident month of September and should be heavily favored over the field at DreamHack Open Rotterdam.
Their toughest opponent should be Forze who also had a great performance at BLAST Moscow. During the group stage, Forze actually finished in first place with a record of 3-1-1. One of those wins came against AVANGAR.

Of course that win was swept aside after their 2-1 loss to the same foes in the finals. The grand finals of DreamHack Rotterdam will likely have these two teams facing off once again.
Second Tier Contenders
At a glance, it looks like the DreamEaters were booted out of the StarLadder Berlin Major rather swiftly. However, they were actually fairly impressive in the Challengers stage. They had one of their best wins over Vitality, NRG and fellow DreamHack competitors Forze.

Sure, in longer series it was evident that DreamEaters were out of their league, but in Rotterdam the pool of teams is much weaker. It’s not that unlikely for this team to pull off an upset of Forze and make it into the finals.
CR4ZY is another team that’s been on the up after some recent tournaments. At StarLadder Berlin they managed to take down the Ninjas in Pyjamas, Faze Clan, and DreamEaters.

The problem with reading into their recent results in that they’ve undergone some roster changes heading into Rotterdam. They moved their coach emi onto the roster as a player as well as added SHiPZ. If not for these moves, CR4ZY would likely be the third favorites to win this event. Instead they are a bit of a wild card. Realistically, they’ll need some more time to mesh before they get back to being competitive.
The only other pick that should be considered to bet on is Heroic. Although they’ll likely fall well short of the finals, they have occasionally shown the ability to pull off upsets. Back at ESL One Cologne, Heroic picked up two big wins over ENCE and BIG. Most recently though, Heroic fell short of winning the GG.Bet Beijing Invitational after getting 2-0’d by Mousesports.
Picks: Stick with the favorites in this one.Â
To Win – AVANGAR (+225)
To Reach the Finals – AVANGAR (-165), Forze (EVEN)
