- True Detective Season 3 has rebounded from an indifferent Season 2
- The whodunit anthology is drawing positive reviews
- Oddsmakers are offering an array of prop bets on the show’s outcome
Time does heal all wounds, including those inflicted by True Detective Season 2. A star-studded cast that included Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams couldn’t save a confusing plot that made an episode of Twin Peaks make perfect sense by comparison.

Four years later, Season 3 has enthralled the critics and caught the attention of the sportsbooks, as multiple props have been released.
In Donald Trump’s MAGA world, Brett Woodard makes for the prototypical perp. Searching for a child killer, who makes a more ideal scapegoat for the mob mentality than the visible minority?

Woodard’s home exploded at the end of Episode 4.

---|---|
Yes | -350 |
No | +225 |
Is it all over for Woodard? We think so. He’s just another victim of this crime.
Does Roland End Up Marrying Lori?

---|---|
Yes | -250 |
No | +170 |
Detective Roland West hooked up with Lori in Episode 4. Was it the beginning of a courtship that will lead them down the aisle?
Roland doesn’t strike us as the settling down type. We don’t see wedding bells in their future.

Then there’s the whole Henry-Eliza dynamic? Are these two an item?

---|---|
Yes | -250 |
No | +170 |
The circumstantial evidence is strong. Two glasses of wine and a disheveled bed at Eliza’s. We’re going with yes on this wager.
Who Burns Down The Purcell House?
True Detective Season 3: Who Burns Down the Purcell House? | Odds |
---|---|
Tom | -200 |
Lucy | +150 |
Tom talks about not wanting to go back to their home, of its haunting memories. Fire would cleanse that.
On the subject of cleansing, someone took out Dan O’Brien, the creepy cousin of Will and Julie Purcell. He was staying with the family at the time of Will’s murder, evidently supplying Will with adult magazines. There was also a peephole in the wall between his and Julie’s rooms.
Who Murdered Dan O’Brien?
True Detective Season 3: Who Murdered Dan O’Brien? | Odds |
---|---|
Wayne/Roland | -200 |
Other Character | +200 |
Tom Purcell | +400 |
O’Brien makes a logical candidate as Will’s murderer, but Tom seems too pathetic to be a vengeance seeker. Lucy Purcell, on the other hand… yeah, we could see that happening.
Will either Wayne or Roland take a bullet before the series is done?

You just know one of them will.
Will Either Roland or Wayne Get Shot Before The Season Ends?

---|---|
Yes | -400 |
No | +250 |
Might that even explain Roland’s absence in the modern-day scenes?
Ultimately, that’s why we’re all tuning in, to find the real killer. As with any murder mystery, the pool of candidates is deep.
Who Murdered Will Purcell?
True Detective Season 3: Who Murdered Will Purcell? | Odds |
---|---|
Freddy Burns | +200 |
Hoyt Foods CEO/Family Member/Employee | +300 |
Man With the ‘Dead Eye | +300 |
Ryan Peters | +300 |
Alan Jones | +500 |
Priest | +500 |
Amelia Reardon | +750 |
Greg Larson | +750 |
Brett Woodard | +2000 |
Lori | +2500 |
Lucy Purcell | +2500 |
Roland West | +2500 |
Tom Purcell | +2500 |
Wayne Hays | +2500 |
Dan O’Brien | +3300 |
There are some we’re ruling out right off the top because it’s too cliche for it to be one of them. That list includes Freddy Burns, Brett Woodard, and Dan O’Brien.
Sam Whitehead appears to be the man with the dead eye. Is this an ode to The Fugitive, like the elusive one-armed man? We don’t think so.
This season to me has so much to do with life, memories, and time. pic.twitter.com/tBbhaL0uEa

There’s a twist coming here – isn’t there always with True Detective? We think the killer will be a woman. There’s been theories put forth that it’s Amelia Reardon – did committing a crime catapult her into true crime writing?
We’re putting our money on Lucy Purcell. She’s definitely no mother of the year candidate, cheating countless times on her husband. Was her death years later from a drug overdose the end of a guilt-ridden existence?
