- The 76th Golden Globe Awards are scheduled for Sunday, January 6th
- Incredibles 2 is currently among the favorites to win Best Animated Picture
- What other films are in the running for the award?
A quality animated film that all audiences can enjoy is difficult to come by nowadays, and on the whole, 2018 didn’t have many of them. There were a handful of entertaining animated pictures over the course of the year, however, and each of them are being acknowledged for their excellence as we approach the 2019 Golden Globe Awards in early January.
Books have odds up on which feature film fans of the Golden Globes are putting money on to clinch the award, and as of now, Incredibles 2 and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse are the co-favorites at +140.
Who Will Win Best Animated Picture at the 2019 Golden Globes?
Series | Odds |
---|---|
Incredibles 2 | +140 |
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse | +140 |
Isle of Dogs | +275 |
Mirai | +1800 |
Ralph Breaks the Internet | +1800 |
Despite being released in theaters just this past month, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has quickly proved to be both a box office draw and a beloved masterpiece with a “fresh” rating of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
The latest retelling of the Spider-Man saga in cartoon form has been praised for its “bold storytelling”, “enjoyable action” and “striking animation.” On the surface, it may look like just another cartoon for kids, but it’s actually anything but, and has been a fine substitute for the Star Wars movies that have normally come out during the holiday season in recent years.

Before Spider-Man hit theaters, there can be no doubt that this award was locked up for months by Incredibles 2. It was easily among the most anticipated animated sequels of the last decade and surely lived up to the hype, kicking off the 2018 summer season for movies with a bang.
Although it lacked the same magic the original had, it didn’t feel like a cash-grab whatsoever and featured a story worth telling. Between the two, though, Spider-Man might be the better bet, if only because it is fresher in the minds of moviegoers and is an overall superior film.

The two critically-acclaimed pictures are trailed by Isle of Dogs, Mirai, and Ralph Breaks the Internet in the odds. All three were terrific, yet pale in comparison to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Incredibles 2.
The Golden Globes have a rich history of exceptional animated films that have won the award in previous years, including Coco and Frozen.
Past Winners of Best Animated Picture at the Golden Globes
Year | Winner |
---|---|
2013 | Frozen |
2014 | How to Train Your Dragon 2 |
2015 | Inside Out |
2016 | Zootopia |
2017 | Coco |
Of the last five films to win Best Animated Picture at the Golden Globes, four of them have been produced by Disney/Pixar. Of course, that speaks volumes about their ability to consistently produce fantastic films year after year, but it also doesn’t bode well for Spider-Man‘s chances to come out on top this year.

Either way, it is bound to be a close call, as both movies are equally deserving of the honor. With Toy Story 4 and How to Train Your Dragon 3 already slated for the coming months, the competition should be even stiffer in 2019.
