No. 19 USC (5-1) visits Penn State (3-2) after a 25-21 win over Washington on October 3. The Trojans face an unranked Nittany Lions team trying to end a two-game losing streak. NBC will carry the broadcast on Saturday, October 10 at 7:30 PM ET.

Penn State surrendered 413 rushing yards in its shocking 34-13 loss at Northwestern on October 2. That defensive performance is a key concern as the Nittany Lions return home as slight favorites. Over its last six-plus quarters, Penn State has been outscored 58-16, blowing a 17-point lead to Wisconsin, then losing by three touchdowns to Northwestern.

Below is my USC vs Penn State prediction, followed by the early spread, betting odds and matchup stats behind my picks.

USC vs Penn State Prediction & College Football Best Bets

  • My pick: USC +1.5 (-111) at BetMGM

When breaking down the USC vs Penn State spread, I see a near-perfect coin toss on paper. However, USC has a clear edge offensively. Quarterback Jayden Maiava is distributing the football efficiently, passing for 290.7 yards per game. He leads an offense generating 467.8 total yards per contest and 6.65 yards per play.

Penn State just allowed over 400 rushing yards to Northwestern. USC features a balanced ground attack averaging 156.2 rushing yards per game. If the Trojans can establish the run early, they will neutralize the raucous crowd and keep Maiava out of predictable third down conversions against a stingy pass defense. Getting points with the more explosive offense is a massive advantage.

As explosive as the USC passing attack is, Lincoln Riley’s goal is always to establish the run. The best USC performances come when USC can play with an avalanche style, picking up first down after first down both in the air and on the ground.

  • My pick: Under 54.5 (-105) at BetMGM

The early betting action clearly favored a lower-scoring script, driving the total down from an opening 56.5 to 54.5. Penn State operates a methodical, lower-volume offense, averaging just 6.10 yards per play. Quarterback Rocco Becht will face a Trojans defense that allows just 25.5 points per game. I am pulling the trigger on the Under.

Same Game Parlay: USC +1.5 & Under 54.5

In a game with a tight 1.5-point spread, combining the underdog with the Under is a classic correlated parlay strategy. That combination follows my low-scoring USC game script, although correlation alone does not establish betting value. Compare same-game parlay availability at BetMGM; a combined price is not quoted here.

USC vs Penn State Spread & Betting Odds

  • Spread: Penn State -1.5 (-108) | USC +1.5 (-111)
  • Moneyline: Penn State -115 | USC -105
  • Total: Over 54.5 (-115) | Under 54.5 (-105)

Odds from BetMGM as of October 5. Compare the latest college football odds ahead of kickoff.

The betting markets reflect an incredibly evenly matched contest. When removing the sportsbook vig to find the normalized implied probabilities, Penn State’s -115 moneyline carries a win probability of 51.08%. USC’s -105 moneyline translates to a vig-free win probability of 48.92%. These estimates sum to 100% after removing the margin; they are not guaranteed win probabilities.

If you wager $20 on Penn State at -115, it yields a profit of $17.39 for a total payout of $37.39. Conversely, placing that same $20 bet on USC at -105 nets a profit of $19.05, returning $39.05 if they pull off the road upset.

USC vs Penn State Public Betting Splits

When analyzing the college football betting splits, evaluating the differences between the ticket count and the money percentage is a crucial tool. Penn State has garnered an overwhelming 94.89% of the betting tickets on the moneyline. The casual bettor is blindly trusting the home team to bounce back.

However, leaning on the more valuable metric, Penn State’s share of the actual handle drops to 64.83%. USC has managed to attract 35.17% of the total money despite holding a minuscule 5.11% of the tickets. This discrepancy indicates that the larger, sharper wagers are skewing favorably toward USC. Backing the Trojans represents a highly contrarian play against the general public.

USC vs Penn State Stats Comparison

To truly understand how this matchup might unfold, we have to isolate the offensive production and defensive playmaking metrics. Below is a breakdown of how these two programs stack up.

StatisticUSC TrojansPenn State Nittany Lions
Points Scored (Per Game)37.332.0
Points Allowed (Per Game)25.516.0
Total Yards (Offense Per Game)467.8400.0
Passing Yards (Offense Per Game)311.7243.6
Rushing Yards (Offense Per Game)156.2156.4
Yards Per Play (Offense)6.656.10
Turnover Margin (Net)-1+6

The statistical mismatches point to a clear advantage for USC in the trenches. Penn State surrendered a staggering amount of rushing yards last week, while USC averages a healthy 6.65 yards per play. If the Trojans exploit that defensive front, they will control the time of possession and win the field position battle.

Penn State boasts an elite turnover margin of +6, heavily reliant on its opportunistic defensive play. They have generated 9 takeaways in just five games. Maiava must display strong pocket presence and avoid forcing passes into a secondary that allows just 119.6 passing yards per game.
