No. 21 Oregon has a chance to respond after a frustrating trip to Stillwater that resulted in a stunning loss to Oklahoma State.

The team that could feel the brunt of that is Friday’s opponent, the Portland State Vikings.

Oregon lost 39-31 at Oklahoma State last week, while Portland State fell 47-23 to North Dakota.

Oregon briefly led Oklahoma State 31-30 in the fourth quarter after Dante Moore found Evan Stewart for a 38-yard touchdown. The Cowboys answered, and a late Oregon fumble ended the comeback attempt. The Ducks had opportunities to win, but their defense could not protect that fourth-quarter lead.

Portland State has allowed 31, 53 and 47 points through three games, an average of 43.7. The Vikings have already struggled to keep opponents out of the end zone before facing the most talented offense on their schedule so far.

I expect Oregon to attack early through Moore and its receivers, then lean on the running game once it establishes a lead. Portland State needs sustained possessions to limit the Ducks’ opportunities; repeated short drives would leave its defense facing too many snaps.

Oregon won the previous meeting 81-7 in 2023. That result is background rather than a projection for different rosters, but it illustrates why winning this matchup and covering an enormous spread are separate questions.

Best bet: Oregon -56.5 (-115 at BetMGM): I’m keeping Oregon as the spread pick, with the expectation that its reserves continue moving the ball after the starters leave. The case for laying the points rests on Portland State’s defensive results across all three games, rather than just its loss to San Diego State. The Vikings have yet to hold an opponent below 31 points, and Oregon should have more ways to sustain scoring drives.

The main threat to this bet is a late Portland State touchdown against a rotated defense. My projected 59-point margin clears the spread by only 2.5 points, so this is a bet on Oregon maintaining production throughout the game, not simply dominating the opening quarter.
