A historic rivalry game kicks off in Week 3 as Oklahoma visits Nebraska.

What a season for Nebraska. After narrowly losing a competitive game to Northwestern in week 0, the Cornhuskers lost as 20-point favorites to Georgia Southern. Nebraska head coach Scott Frost was promptly fired following the monumental upset.

For Oklahoma, it’s business as usual. Despite the loss of head coach Lincoln Riley and a number of high-profile recruits, the program landed on its feet. New bench boss Brent Venables is no slouch. With his network and recruiting influence throughout the south, the Sooners are in good hands. Oklahoma has swept its slate so far, defeating UTEP and Kent State by a combined score of 88-16.

In the wake of how poor the Cornhuskers have played this season, it’s a wonder this line isn’t 4 to 5 points higher. Perhaps oddsmakers are hoping for a new coach boost for Nebraska. Otherwise, there’s really no reason to believe the Cornhuskers can stay within 11 points of a dominant Oklahoma offense.

Boomer Sooner

After scoring just seven points in the first half against Kent State last weekend, questions arose about this Oklahoma offense. Consider those questions answered. The Sooners blitzed the Golden Flashes in the second half, scoring 26 unanswered points to win by a score of 33-3.

Sooners junior quarterback Dillon Gabriel put up 296 yards and 3 touchdowns in the win. More importantly, he fed top target Marvin Mims, to the tune of 163 receiving yards.

A week after holding UTEP’s offense to just 13 points and 28 rushing yards, the defense put up another impressive showing versus Kent State. Oklahoma’s stingy defense has been the story of the season so far. Unsurprisingly, the defense has thrived under Venables’ leadership. A forced fumble kickstarted the rout last weekend, while the defense added a fourth-quarter safety to put a cherry on top of the win. Should Venables be able to turn a notoriously leaky defense into a strength, the sky is the limit for this program.

Nebraska Searches for Identity

As interim head coach Mickey Joseph takes over for the departed Scott Frost, this Cornhuskers team is in a state of disarray. However, a motivated team can be a dangerous one.

Texas transfer and Oklahoma City native Casey Thompson is the focal point of the offense. He also just happened to have the best game of his career last week against Georgia Southern. Thompson threw for 318 yards and a touchdown, while adding three more scores on the ground. The junior quarterback can really let it rip, and receivers Trey Palmer and Marcus Washington will certainly give him that opportunity on Saturday.

However, it’s tough to see the Cornhuskers being able to pull off the upset in this one. Nebraska has been extremely undisciplined this season and handed Georgia Southern a way back into the game last week. Additionally, the Cornhuskers’ defense has allowed opponents to score on a whopping 81% of red zone opportunities so far. Furthermore, their weak defensive line has generated just two sacks in three games against subpar opposition. That’s not going to cut it against Oklahoma.

Oklahoma vs Nebraska Pick

This is a rivalry that dates all the way back to 1912, with the Sooners leading the all-time series 46-38-3. Oklahoma has won the past two matchups, though both have been decided by 7 points or less.

Nebraska may be boosted by their new coach, however, there’s little reason to believe the Cornhuskers can win this game. Much like last week, look for Oklahoma to pull away in the second half. That being said, the real betting value in this rivalry game lies with the under.
