It’s another Big Ten clash as the #2 Ohio State Buckeyes (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) host the Purdue Boilermakers (1-7, 0-5 Big Ten) at Ohio Stadium in Columbus on Saturday, November 9, 2024.

The Buckeyes are fresh off a statement 20-13 win at Penn State, while Purdue enters on a seven-game losing streak after falling to Northwestern in overtime. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. ET on FOX.

Let’s dive into our Ohio State vs Purdue prediction for Saturday’s Big Ten matchup.

Ohio State vs Purdue Prediction

Don’t be fooled by Ohio State’s hefty spread – the underdog has some sneaky value here. While the Buckeyes boast the nation’s third-ranked scoring defense (12.0 ppg), their offense has been less explosive than in years past, failing to score 40 points since Week 3.

The Buckeyes have become more methodical under quarterback Will Howard, who’s thrown for 1,977 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. Their ground-and-pound approach with running backs Quinshon Judkins (615 yards) and company helps control games but doesn’t always lead to the huge margins oddsmakers expect.

Purdue, despite their record, showed signs of life last week with quarterback Hudson Card’s return. Card threw for 267 yards against Northwestern, and the Boilermakers have played two overtime games in their last three contests.

The Buckeyes should win comfortably, but covering a 38-point spread requires style points that haven’t been Ohio State’s focus lately. The betting trends support this view – a slight majority (52%) of bets are backing Purdue to cover.

For my Ohio State vs Purdue prediction 2024, I’m picking Purdue to cover the massive spread while projecting a final score around 48-13 Ohio State. OSU has never been such a heavy favorite against the Boilermakers, and they are only 5-5 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

Ohio State vs Purdue Player Props

Here are two player props I’ve locked in for Saturday’s game:

Jeremiah Smith 85+ Receiving Yards (-110)

The freshman sensation has been a dominant force, already surpassing Cris Carter’s freshman receiving record with 678 yards.

Smith faces a Purdue defense that ranks among the worst in the Big Ten against the pass. The Boilermakers have particularly struggled with big plays, which plays right into Smith’s strengths as a downfield threat.

Will Howard Longest Completion Over 44.5 Yards (-115)

Howard has connected on at least one pass of 45+ yards in five games this season. With dynamic receivers like Smith and Emeka Egbuka at his disposal, and facing a Purdue defense that has allowed more 40+ yard plays than any other Big Ten team, this prop is great value.

Ohio State vs Purdue Odds

The oddsmakers have installed Ohio State as a massive favorite in this Big Ten clash. The Buckeyes are laying 38 points, with moneyline odds of -10000. Purdue finds itself as a substantial underdog with moneyline odds of +1325.

The over/under opened at 54 points but has settled at 53.5, meaning bettors expect a relatively controlled game by Ohio State standards.

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Purdue +38 (-110) +1325 Over 53.5 (-105)
(2) Ohio State -38 (-110) -10000 Under 53.5 (-115)

Odds as of Nov. 8, 2024 at BetMGM. Browse the top college football betting apps for Ohio State vs Purdue.

The lopsided odds reflect Ohio State’s dominance (37.8 ppg) and Purdue’s struggles (20.3 ppg). The Buckeyes’ elite defense, allowing just 12 points per game, poses a major challenge for a Purdue offense that ranks 124th nationally in scoring.

Ohio State vs Purdue Injury Report

The most notable injury situation heading into this Big Ten clash involves Ohio State offensive lineman Josh Simmons, who has been ruled out. Offensive lineman Zen Michalski is questionable.

For Purdue, wide receiver De’Nylon Morrissette and tight end George Burhenn are questionable to play. The Boilermakers are also monitoring the status of wide receiver Jayden Dixon-Veal.
