  • I like North Carolina to cover (or perhaps win outright) against a shaky Clemson team
  • Even in a win last week, Clemson looked vulnerable, scoring just one touchdown versus Georgia Southern
  • Read my North Carolina vs Clemson prediction, betting line and best bets below

North Carolina takes its 2-0 record to Clemson on Saturday, September 19, for an ACC opener at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is at noon ET on ESPN.

The Tar Heels beat East Tennessee State 35-3 last week. Clemson improved to 1-1 with a 22-7 win over Georgia Southern, leaning heavily on its defense and five Nolan Hauser field goals.

My North Carolina vs Clemson prediction examines whether the Tigers can turn more of their possessions into touchdowns. The spread pick, Kalshi prices and other best bets follow.

I want the points with North Carolina. Clemson’s defense gives the Tigers a solid foundation, but its offense produced just one touchdown against Georgia Southern. That touchdown came on a short field following a muffed punt, which makes the lack of sustained scoring more concerning.

Clemson still won comfortably because its defense repeatedly got off the field. It forced eight three-and-outs, giving the offense more opportunities without requiring a shootout. I expect that defensive strength to keep Saturday close, which is why getting more than a field goal appeals to me.

North Carolina had more balance against ETSU, finishing with 427 yards: 266 passing and 161 rushing. Billy Edwards Jr threw for 244 yards, while the running backs shared the carries. The Tar Heels have options beyond asking one player to carry every possession.

Those numbers came against an FCS opponent, so I’m not treating them as proof that UNC will move the ball easily in Death Valley. Clemson is a much harder test. The case for North Carolina rests on doing enough to stay within one score against a home offense that has yet to finish drives consistently.

Clemson can win this game and still lose the spread contract. A three-point Tigers victory would be enough for my North Carolina pick to cash. That extra half-point is valuable in a matchup where field goals could make the difference.

In a game with a total of just 42.5, the 3.5-point spread is extra valuable. Kalshi’s lines project a score like Clemson 23, North Carolina 20. I anticipate even fewer points being scored.

North Carolina vs Clemson Best Bets

  • Total pick: Under 42.5 points. Buy No on over 42.5 at 46¢ on Kalshi.

The under is my next choice: No on over 42.5 points at 46¢. Clemson’s defensive performance last week fits that bet, and settling for field goals on offense can keep a game below this number even when the Tigers move into scoring range.

North Carolina also kept ETSU out of the end zone and allowed only 77 rushing yards. Clemson will present more problems, but the Tar Heels do not need another near-shutout for the under. They need to limit explosive scoring plays and make the Tigers earn their points through longer drives.

This is not to say the 2026 TCU Horned Frogs will challenge 2019 LSU for offensive superiority, but North Carolina held TCU to just 10 points in the season opener. UNC has allowed just 3.9 yards per play thus far, forcing three turnovers.

Clemson has a 51-point explosion at the hands of 2026 LSU to account for, but North Carolina is a far cry from that squad from an offensive talent perspective. While Georgia Southern is not some juggernaut, I would imagine Clemson’s defensive baseline is closer to allowing seven points per game the 51 points per game.

I also lean toward UNC’s outright upset at 40¢, though the spread is my first choice. Buying both would largely repeat the same position. With Clemson at home and capable of winning a close game, I prefer keeping the protection of those 3.5 points.
