Minnesota attempts to start a season 4-0 for the first time since 2019 when it visits Michigan State at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday in the Big Ten opener for both teams at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

Last Saturday, Minnesota (3-0) rolled to a 49-7 victory over visiting Colorado. Michigan State (2-1) went on the road and lost to Washington 39-28, a defeat that dropped the Spartans from #11 to all the way out of the AP top 25 media poll.

Minnesota is a three-point favorite on the road after opening as a 1.5-point pick in a game that will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

Minnesota is a -145 favorite on the moneyline, giving it an implied win probability of 59.18% in the college football odds. The Golden Gophers are listed at +1767 in the Big Ten championship odds while Michigan State is at +4500.

There are a 30% chance of showers in East Lansing on Saturday. The forecast calls for mostly cloudy, a high of 64 and south wind at 3-8 mph.

Minnesota Betting Outlook

Minnesota has been dominant in its first three games, winning by a combined 149-17.

The competition has been rather suspect, though, with the victories coming over New Mexico State, Western Illinois of the FCS and Colorado. None of those three teams have won a game this season.

Nevertheless, Minnesota is second in the nation in total offense with an average of 554.7 yards a game. The Gophers’ 49.7 scoring average ranks eighth.

The defense also ranks among the best in the nation. Minnesota is second in yards per game at 170.3 and fifth in points a game at 5.7.

The Gophers held Colorado to 227 total yards last week and 136 came in the fourth quarter against Minnesota reserves.

Leading the charge for Minnesota’s offense is running back Mohamed Ibrahim. His 464 rushing yards are second nationally and have come on 67 attempts. He has also run for seven touchdowns.

Ibrahim’s 2021 season ended in the opener when he tore his Achilles against Ohio.

Senior quarterback Tanner Morgan has completed 71.7% of his 53 passes for 618 yards. He also has four touchdown passes versus one interception.

However, Minnesota’s top receiver will miss the remainder of the season. Chris Autman-Bell sustained an injury to his lower right leg in last week’s game that required surgery.

Michigan State Betting Outlook

Michigan State laid an egg at Washington. The Spartans fell behind 29-8 by halftime and had just 90 total yards through three quarters before rallying in the fourth period to make the final score respectable.

The defense had no answer for Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. He threw for 397 yards and four touchdowns a year after Michigan State had the worst pass defense in the nation.

Michigan State did not sack Penix after entering the game leading the FBS in that category

Meanwhile, the Spartans failed to establish a running game. Michigan State managed just 42 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Payton Thorne gamely tried to rally Michigan State in the second half. He wound up completing 30 of 42 passes for 323 yards with three touchdowns and an interception.

Keon Coleman had nine catches for 116 yards and two scores.

Two of Michigan State’s starters did not make the trip to Seattle because of injuries, wide receiver Jayden Reed and defensive tackle Jacob Slate.

The school did not provide details on the injuries. It is unknown if the duo can play Saturday.

Minnesota vs Michigan State Prediction

Due to a scheduling quirk, the teams are meeting for the first time since 2017 overall and first time in East Lansing since 2013. Michigan State leads the all-time series 30-17 and has won five in a row.

Minnesota’s stats and record are impressive, but it hasn’t played anybody. Look for coach Mel Tucker to have the Spartans ready after last week’s disappointment.
