A pivotal Big Ten clash kicks off this afternoon, at 3:30 PM ET on CBS, as the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes visit the No. 14 Iowa Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium. Both programs are tied for second in the conference, making this a crucial regular season battle.

The Hawkeyes enter as an undefeated home underdog with a perfect 4-0 record, fresh off a narrow 20-19 victory over Michigan. The visiting Buckeyes arrive at 3-1, carrying heavy backing in the college football odds after a dominant 42-19 win against Illinois.

This top 15 matchup presents a fascinating puzzle for handicappers trying to weigh undeniable offensive talent against unblemished momentum and a traditional home field edge. Keep reading for my final Ohio State vs Iowa prediction and picks, along with the updated odds for Oct. 3, below.

Final Ohio State vs Iowa Prediction & Picks

In my early preview on September 28, I recommended the Under at 45.5 points at -108 odds in my early Ohio State vs Iowa prediction. The number remains unchanged at 45.5, with the current price sitting at a slightly adjusted -109 on the Under. I am sticking to my original read. While the visitors boast an explosive offense averaging 45 points and 522 total yards per game, they are facing a brick wall.

The Hawkeyes field suffocating defensive schemes allowing just 8 points and 239.8 total yards per game. The biggest risk to the Under is wide receiver and Heisman Trophy odds contender Jeremiah Smith, who finished with 12 catches for 217 yards and four touchdowns last week. However, Iowa relies heavily on ground and pound tactics to bleed the clock. Their methodical pace naturally suppresses total possessions.

Both defenses have been effective at limiting opponents’ scoring opportunities. Ohio State has allowed 24 points or less in 28 straight games, while Iowa has held opponents under 30 points in 23 consecutive matchups. Quarterback Hank Brown relies heavily on play action, posting 10 yards per attempt on those concepts compared to a meager 5.6 without it. I expect the Buckeyes to crowd the line and try to force Brown into uncomfortable passing downs.

The most glaring dynamic is the sheer volume of the Buckeyes’ offensive output against a Hawkeyes defense that relies on strict gap control. Ohio State, a top National Championship odds contender, is operating at an elite level, racking up video game offensive numbers. Iowa’s 239.8 total yards allowed per game shows how effectively the home defense limits opposing production. The turnover differential will dictate whether the visitors can find short fields.

To counteract this, the home defense will need to dial up the pressure in the trenches. Iowa has recorded 9 sacks so far this season. If the Hawkeyes cannot consistently disrupt pocket presence, the blistering pace of the visitors will overpower them.

On the other side of the ball, the home team brings a much more deliberate offensive approach fuelled by the run. The Hawkeyes will face a stiff test against a visiting defense that excels at creating negative plays and halting third-down conversions.

The betting market overwhelmingly expects the visiting squad to take care of business on the road. Oddsmakers installed them as massive outright favorites, laying just over two touchdowns on the point spread. The total sits at a modest 45.5 points, with slightly more juice leaning toward the Over.
