College Football Picks Against the Spread Week 3

• Week 3 of College Football features some intriguing games on Saturday, September 17th
• Miami (FL) vs Texas A&M and BYU vs Oregon are among the marquee matchups

Week 3 of the 2022 College Football season features a handful of compelling matchups on Saturday, September 17th. The game between No. 13 Miami (FL) and No. 24 Texas A&M is the headliner.

In addition to the “Show-Me” game in College Station, No. 25 Oregon has an opportunity to quiet some critics when it hosts No. 12 BYU. Meantime, a pair of former Big Eight rivals — No. 6 Oklahoma and Nebraska — meet in Lincoln.

Here are CFB betting odds and three ATS picks to consider for Week 3.

Miami (FL) vs Texas A&M Odds

ATS Pick #1: Miami FL (+5) vs Texas A&M

Football is a “Prove It” game — and there’s no bigger contest on the Week 3 schedule than Miami seeking a statement win and A&M  hoping to rebound from a stunning upset loss. The ‘Canes are coming off a 30-7 victory against Southern Miss and feature speedy return man Devon Archane and projected first-round NFL draft pick Tyler Van Dyke at quarterback.

Van Dyke rebounded from a shaky first half to go 21-of-30 for 255 yards, a touchdown and his first interception of the year. He’s coming off a season that saw him throw for at least 300 yards and three touchdowns in six straight games — joining Joe Burrow as the only Power 5 quarterbacks if the playoff era to do that.

Joining Van Dyke on offense are running backs Henry Parrish Jr (an Ole Miss transfer who is coming off consecutive 100-yard games) and Jaylan Knighton (last year’s leading rusher for The U with 561 yards and 11 total touchdowns) and top receiver Xavier Restrepo. He leads the team in catches (11) and receiving yards (172) and has averaged 15.6 per catch. This game appears very evenly matched.

Meantime, the Aggies enter Saturday’s home tilt with many questions. Once a sleeper pick for a spot in the CFP, head coach Jimbo Fisher was contemplating everything from relieving himself of play-calling duties to a switch at quarterback after a 17-14 home defeat to Appalachian State. Haynes King led the offense to just seven points in the loss, not counting a special-teams touchdown.

The Aggies may have issues offensively, but their defense is a force. TAMU has limited opponents to 8.5 points per game, which ranks tied for 11th in the country and is allowing 256 yards per game, which ranks 21st best in the country.

First-year Miami head coach Mario Cristobal took an Oregon team into a hostile environment last and came away with a stunning victory at Ohio State. The Hurricanes may not beat the Aggies, but it should tight.

BYU vs Oregon Odds

ATS Pick #2: BYU (+4) vs Oregon

BYU come into Eugene fresh off a 26-20 double-overtime win at home against Baylor that was the program’s first victory over a top-10 at home since beating Miami in 1990. That Cougars team — lead by eventual Heisman Trophy winner Ty Detmer — played the Ducks the following week and lost 32-16. Now, Kalani Sitake’s team will try to avenge that loss and keep the ball rolling in 2022.

A big key will BYU’s rushing attack. The Cougars only managed 83 yards on the ground against the Bears, with starting running back Chris Brooks only tallying 31 yards on 13 carries. As a team, the Cougars averaged 2.5 yards per carry. That needs to improve against an Oregon team that is still a mystery.

The Ducks throttled Eastern Washington 70-14 in Week 2 to rebound from a complete no-show against defending national champion and current No. 1 Georgia in the season opener. Auburn transfer Bo Nix tossed five touchdowns in the win. But, Oregon’s identity is still very much in question. So far, BYU appears to be the better team.

Oklahoma vs Nebraska Odds

ATS Pick #3: Oklahoma (-11) vs Nebraska

Speaking of searching for an identity, we submit the back-end of a home-and-home between a pair of erstwhile superpowers of the sport. OU beat Nebraska 23-16 in 2021 and this year’s edition is the last matchup between these history-laden programs until 2029.

The headline here is the coaching change in Lincoln.

As interim, Mickey Joseph is the first Black head coach in Nebraska history.

The Sooners — led by quarterback Dillon Gabriel — should roll up plenty of points against a highly-suspect Husker defense.
