No. 1 Alabama is listed as a 22.5-point home favorite on the road against Arkansas as the two teams get ready for another SEC West tilt. Texas A&M may be in a lot of trouble this week but there is a minor detail to consider.

As 22.5-point favorites, Alabama will actually be facing almost the exact margin the Crimson Tide just defeated Arkansas on the road by (23 points). Alabama managed to cover a spread that had expanded to as many as 19-20 points versus the Razorbacks. They still won 49-26. The Crimson Tide raised their record to 4-1 ATS.

The only time Alabama did not cover the spread is on the road against Texas where they won 20-19. Texas A&M is just 2-3 ATS but is ironically 2-0 against the spread versus ranked teams (Arkansas and Miami of Florida).

Alabama Is a Huge Home Favorite

Alabama and Nick Saban are always trying to win the National Championship but a conference title is a nice first step. Oddsmakers see the Crimson Tide at nearly even in the SEC Conference odds, where they sit at +105 now. That is still behind Georgia at -110.

Alabama (+250) is third to UGA (+200) and Ohio State (+225) in the National Championship odds.

Last week’s game against Arkansas saw Alabama jump out to a 28-0 lead. The first of three games Alabama had against ranked opponents was going maybe too well. That is when Bryce Young wrenched his shoulder late in the second quarter. Nick Saban provided an update after the game. Talk is Young has an AC Joint Sprain and might miss some time depending on degree of sprain.

The Crimson Tide defense was somewhat tested after they went up big late in the first half. Alabama yielded 187 yards rushing to the Razorbacks but that took 51 Arkansas rushes. They also held K.J. Jefferson to just 50% passing on the afternoon. Arguably, other than that third-quarter blip, the Crimson Tide defense allowed very little in a hostile environment.

Head coach Jimbo Fisher has to wonder what the heck happened on Saturday in Starkville. The Aggies fell behind big against Mississippi State. They were down 21-3 late in the third quarter and never truly recovered. As a result, Texas A&M fell out of the Coaches’ Poll and the AP Poll.

Kindly put, Texas A&M was thoroughly outplayed in the first half in particular. The Aggies scored zero points and though they managed 24 points in the second half, they were not in this game. Max Johnson was able to replace a largely ineffective Haynes King and managed to have the same amount of incompletions (7) on twice the amount of passes (26 to 13).

This game is part of more clashes on the second Saturday in October.

This is the one that has to eat at Jimbo Fisher as they say. Kansas, of all teams, is now ranked. The Jayhawks were expected to win two games all year and are 5-0. Meanwhile, the Aggies had expectations of at least contending for the SEC West or possibly finishing second. That may be problematic with this inconsistent offense and a defense that allowed nearly 500 yards to Mississippi State. Just imagine what Alabama can do with Bryce Young or with even more mobile Jalen Milroe.

Some may think 22.5 points is outrageous but there were a few places that were approaching 24 points.

Texas A&M has to score early to take some momentum away from Alabama but can they?
