The 2020 West Coast Conference tournament has reached the championship game and to no one’s surprise, two of the top three teams in the standings (and seedings) are the two teams left vying for the prize.
The No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs are favored, but are they the right bet to win and cover over the No. 3 St. Mary’s Gaels?

Zags Edge Past San Francisco
San Francisco surprised some people by making it all the way to the semifinals. After all, they were the No. 5 seed in the tournament and fourth in line in terms of the pre-tournament odds. However, not only did they get to the semis, they gave the Zags a scare. Gonzaga was favored by 13 but won 81-77.

It was a dicey one for the Bulldogs as they trailed 68-67 with 5:11 to go, which was surprising considering they had already topped San Francisco twice this season. They won the second meeting by 17 points.
However, Gonzaga was a bit sleepy after getting a triple bye and they had to fight for the win.
St. Mary’s Survives BYU
We can an early taste of March Madness in the St. Mary’s-BYU showdown. St. Mary’s, who trailed nearly the entire night, edged past the Cougars thanks to a Jordan Ford basket with just 1.4 seconds left. That put the Gaels on top 51-50 for good.

Ford did the heavy lifting for the Gaels as he finished the day with 18 points, four rebounds, two steals, two threes and an assist. It was a forgettable night for Malik Fitts, who is second on the team with 16.7 points per game. He had just nine points on two-of-13 shooting.
That sets up a rematch of the 2019 WCC Championship Game but this looks like a favorable matchup for Gonzaga. They won the two regular season showdowns with St. Mary’s, winning by 10 on the road and by 30 at home.
What’s the Best Bet?
We have to be careful here because the Bulldogs don’t need a win here; they’re going to the Tournament either way. A loss will hurt their seeding but probably not by much. We saw the same last year when Gonzaga had already punched their ticket to the dance and ended up losing 60-47 to Saint Mary’s in the championship game.

At the same time, the Bulldogs should be motivated here after falling short last season to St. Mary’s. Not only that, if they win here, they’ll probably be the No. 1 seed in the West Region and get to play their first two games in Spokane, which is right down the street from campus. That will improve their National Championship odds.
Look for them to take care of business on Tuesday and earn the win.
