The #21 Saint Mary’s Gaels (27-4, 17-1 WCC, 14-17 ATS) will look to cap off a sublime WCC campaign when they face the Gonzaga Bulldogs (24-8, 14-4 WCC, 13-19 ATS) in the conference championship game on Tuesday night at Orleans Arena in Paradise, Nevada, at 6:00 pm PT/9:00 pm ET. The opening Gonzaga vs Saint Mary’s odds list the Bulldogs as slight favorites in what will be the third meeting of the season between the teams.

Both teams are locks for an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament so Tuesday’s title game is for seeding and pride.

Saint Mary’s Path to the WCC Tournament Final

As the top seed, Saint Mary’s received a bye directly to the semifinals of the WCC Tournament. There, the Gaels lucked out by meeting the ninth-seeded Pepperdine Waves, a team that had pulled off three upsets in three days to reach the semis. Saint Mary’s dominated Pepperdine for a third straight time this season, taking a double-digit lead into halftime (39-29) and cruising to a 15-point victory (74-59).

Senior guard and leading scorer Augustus Marciulionis (14.4 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 6.1 APG) had 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists while sophomore forward Paulius Murauskas (12.8 PPG, 8.1 RPG, 1.4 APG) added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Saint Mary’s beat Gonzaga twice in the regular season, 62-58 in Moraga as 2.5-point home underdogs, and 74-67 in Spokane as seven-point road ‘dogs.

Gonzaga’s Road to WCC Championship Game

Like Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga also received a bye to the WCC Tournament semifinals as the #2 seed. Unlike the Gaels, though, the Zags would get a stiff test from third-seeded San Francisco. The Dons took a two-point lead into halftime (37-35) before Gonzaga exploded for 50 second-half points in an 85-76 win.

Graham Ike (17.0 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.4 APG), who would be among the favorites in the Wooden Award odds if Cooper Flagg and Johni Broome weren’t having historically good seasons, spurred the Bulldogs’ comeback with a massive 7-point and 10-rebound double-double, along with three assists.

Khalif Battle added 21 points and four boards.

Early Gonzaga vs Saint Mary’s Picks & Lines to Target

There’s no doubt that the Zags have the talent to hang with the Gaels, but they haven’t played up to their potential for the better part of the last two months. In the two setbacks to Saint Mary’s, Gonzaga allowed the Gaels to dominate the glass. The Gaels finished +13 at the Kennel and +6 in Moraga.

Saint Mary’s also played excellent perimeter defense on the Zags in both games. Gonzaga shot just 17.6% from three in the first meeting, and 28.6% from beyond the arc in the second.

The good news for the Zags is that they left a lot of room for improvement in the two previous games against the Gaels. Mark Few has never lost two straight WCC title games since taking over as head coach (1999-2000) and Gonzaga hasn’t lost back-to-back WCC Tournaments since 1998.

I expect the Zags, who rate higher at KenPom (9th vs 22nd), to finally get the better of their archrivals.

Gonzaga vs Saint Mary’s prediction: Gonzaga -1.5 (-110)
