Two coaching legends meet for a chance to reach the Sweet 16 in the West Region. John Calipari led 10-seed Arkansas (21-13, 15-18-1 ATS) to a 79-72 victory over Kansas in the Round of 64 on Thursday. Rick Pitino has revitalized St. John’s (31-4, 22-11-2 ATS), and they have a chance to make it to their program’s first Sweet 16 since 1999 after defeating the 15-seed Omaha 83-53.

Calipari and Pitino have coached against each other 23 times in their careers, and Calipari has won 13 of those games. They have met four times in the NCAA Tournament and have split those games. Who will get the win in 2025?

The 2-seed St. John’s is favored to defeat Arkansas in the latest college basketball odds. The Johnnies opened as 5.5-point favorites vs Arkansas, but that number quickly shot up and the Red Storm are now -7.5. Sportsbooks are giving St. John’s a 75.61% probability to advance to the Sweet 16.

The total in this game has also seen some movement. The O/U opened at 140.5 but has since been bet up to 144.5.

Arkansas vs St. John’s KenPom Comparison

Adj. Defensive Efficiency (Rank)95.3 (18)87.2 (1)
Adj. Tempo (Rank)69.5 (67)70.0 (52)

The Johnnies are ranked first in the entire country in defensive efficiency. They swarm on defense, allow just 65.5 points per game, and have only given up over 75 points twice over their last 20 games.

Arkansas is ranked in the top 20 in defensive efficiency. For teams that are better on the defensive side of the ball, they both surprisingly play at a pretty good tempo. With both of these defenses playing at a high level, this game might just come down to who can make their shots.

Arkansas vs St. John’s Prediction

Even with it being a 10-seed vs a 2-seed, this has the potential to be the game of the day. Both are hot coming into this one as Arkansas has won five of their last seven and St. John’s has been victorious in 10 straight. St. John’s has also covered the spread in five straight.

It is tough to bet against St. John’s right now with how dominant they have been which is why the number has moved in their favor in this one. However, they have continuously gotten off to slow starts. Even against Omaha in the Round of 64, they trailed early and were only up five at the break. We all know how that turned out as they won by 30, but slow starts are nothing new to this team. They beat Creighton in the Big East Championship by 16 points, but they were down three at the half. I am predicting that that trend will continue in this game.

St. John’s is not a great shooting team. They shoot just 30.8% from behind the arc and are 342nd in the country in three-point rate. They rely on their physicality and defense to win games, and they will have a difficult time against the size of Arkansas. Zuby Ejiofor for St. John’s is 6’9, but outside of that, they don’t have the size to matchup with 6’11 Jonas Aidoo and 6’10 Trevon Brazile, who has a double-double in five straight games.

RJ Luis is a true scorer, but I trust Arkansas’s guards Johnell Davis and Boogie Fland to keep this game close. Davis has a lot of tournament experience after leading FAU to the Final Four a couple of years ago.

I believe St. John’s wins this game, but I have a hard time laying this ever-growing number. Instead, I am opting for a first-half play and betting on Arkansas to keep it close. They matchup up well with St. John’s and have better shooters.

Arkansas vs St. John’s Pick: Arkansas 1H +4.5 (-120)

Johnell Davis (ARK)12.5 (Ov -120 | Un -110)OFFOFF2+ Made Threes (-132)

There are two player props in this game that I am looking at. I already mentioned Johnell Davis’s tournament experience, and I believe he will play a big role in this game. His point total is set at 12.5, and he has cleared that number in four of his last five games.

Trevon Brazile’s points prop is 8.5, and he has an opportunity to go over that, even with St. John’s physicality. He has been playing some great basketball of late and has at least 11 points in six of his last seven games.

Arkansas vs St. John’s Player Prop Picks:

  • Johnell Davis Over 12.5 Points (-120)
  • Trevon Brazile Over 8.5 Points (-125)
