So we meet again. When the LSU Tigers (49-16) meet the Tennessee Volunteers (44-21) this time around, someone’s run at the College World Series will be over and the game is expected to be close according to the LSU vs Tennessee odds.

After Wake Forest outlasted the Tigers 3-2 Monday night, LSU will now face a one-and-done scenario against the same team they sent into a pressure cooker.

LSU put the Vols on the tightrope with a 6-3 win in their CWS opener to kick off the double-elimination portion of their bracket. Tennessee stayed alive and sent Stanford packing in the process with a 6-4 come-from-behind win.

It’s not exactly a great scenario facing the survivor of Tuesdays showdown. Top-seeded Wake Forest is into the semi-finals of the CWS, so LSU or Tennessee will need to knock off the Demon Deacons in two straight to advance to the title game.

LSU vs Tennessee Probable Pitchers

While it’s yet to be confirmed, Tennessee is likely to trot out righty Drew Beam, who went 9-4 with a 3.78 In 16 starts this year.

He put up some of his best work in Game 3 of the Super Regional, pitching six shutout innings while fanning seven in a win over Southern Miss. That performance put Tennessee into the College World Series.

Prior to that start, Beam went six strong, giving up four hits and two runs while fanning a season-best 10 in a win over Charlotte.

LSU has yet to name a stater, but if you listen to Tigers’ head coach Jay Johnson, it likely doesn’t matter much who gets the call.

Johnson said LSU has nine guys available to pitch Tuesday. “We’ll choose one of them. He’ll get guys out as long as he can and then we’ll go to next guy and then we’ll go to the next guy until we figure out how to get 27 outs against a really good team, he said.”

AsLSU will likely do it by committee, one logical choice would be lefty Riley Cooper. He made a team-high 30 appearances on the year with just one start. He’s gone 4-3 with a 4.20 ERA in 40.2 innings.

How LSU and Tennessee Got Here

The Tigers went toe-to-toe with the Deacons Monday, a battle of the only two teams to be ranked no. 1 in college baseball this season. After building a 2-0 lead, LSU could not hold onto the lead.

Tied 2-2 in the eighth, the Tigers had runners on the corners, but Tre Morgan was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice. Gabe Dugan then hit into a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom half of the inning, Bennett Lee singled home Danny Corona for what would be the game-winning run.

On the other side, Tennessee was staring into the abyss of a 4-0 deficit, but chipped away to win 6-4. The Vols’ runs came via a pair of singles, a sacrifice fly and a groundout.

They were powered by a fantastic relief stint from Chase Burns. After Chase Dollander was chased after three innings and four earned runs, Burns was lights out the rest of the way, going six strong, striking out nine, and retiring 18 of the 20 batters he faced.

This will be the fifth and final meeting between these teams this season, with the Tigers winning three of the previous four. The latest, of course, was the 6-3 win in the CWS opener, where Paul Skenes went to work.

College baseball’s strikeout king went 7.2 innings and struck out 12, as the Vols could not recover from 5-0 deficit.

Tennessee has the second-best ERA in the nation (3.62) and a distinct advantage over the Tigers, who are tied for 35th (4.51).

Then again, the Tigers boast the highest-scoring offense in the country, ringing up 9.3 runs per game, while hitting .313 as a team, the second-best total of any team left standing. The Vols are no slouch, riding up 7.5 runs per game themselves.

Both of these teams dig the long ball, as LSU is third with 135 dingers, and Tennessee in sixth with 126.
