The second weekend of UFL action kicks off Friday night between the Stallions and Panthers, two teams that know each other very well. Last year, Birmingham won all three meetings, including the USFL Conference Championship game.

Despite winning their first contest of the season, Michigan finds themselves as the underdog in this matchup, given that the Stallions are defending UFL champions. Kickoff for this tilt is scheduled for 8pm ET from Ford Field, in Detroit, Michigan. FOX provides the broadcast coverage in the United States.

Birmingham Stallions Analysis

The first game of the season was not pretty for the defending champs. They lost 18-11 to the DC Defenders, with quarterback Alex McGough looking lost behind a leaky offensive line. The Stallions pivot was sacked eight times, and he was a woeful 10-for-23 for just 89 passing yards, one TD pass and one INT. He did, however, use his legs well, with eight rushes for 84 yards.

McGough certainly didn’t have much help from his skilled position players behind the strong defensive performance by DC. The running backs had twelve carries for just 38 yards, and his top receiver had only 28 yards on two receptions (Davion Davis).

What Birmingham has going for them is that they’re coming off a title last year, and the three victories against Michigan. In Week 2, they won 20-13, scraped by with a 20-19 nail biter in week 10. In that contest, Michigan had several penalties that cost them points or kept Birmingham on the field. Then, in the USFL Conference Championship tilt, it was 31-18 for the Stallions. The score was actually 18-3 for Michigan at one point, before 28 unanswered points were notched to close out the contest.

Michigan Panthers Analysis

The Michigan Panthers got out to a strong start to their campaign, with a Week 1 26-12 whipping at the hands of the Memphis Showboats. Quarterback Bryce Perkins had a strong performance, going 16-for-19 for 163 yards and a TD pass. He also scampered into the end zone with his legs, kicking off a great start to the season.

Two of their wideouts had strong, if unspectacular, outings, with Marcus Simms hauling in four passes for 53 yards and Malik Turner with five catches for 40 yards. Siaosi Mariner and Samson Nacua each had 35 receiving yards, the latter catching the Perkins TD pass.

The defense was also stout, allowing just the twelve points, with three sacks, four tackles for loss, along with a Kai Nacua pick-six interception return TD to paydirt.

Stallions vs Panthers Prediction

Despite Michigan winning their first game and Birmingham losing, I still can’t get past the Stallions beating them on all three occasions last year. Plus, Panthers Head Coach Mike Nolan is 0-and-4 in his career against the Stallions Head Coach Skip Holtz.

Though it’s been a couple of years since Alex McGough last played in a pro football game, he was the 2022 and 2023 USFL champion and 2023 season MVP. After knocking off the rust in the first game, I suspect he’ll be more prepared to be like the player who led the USFL with 20 TD passes in 2023. Selecting the Stallions to cover the 2.5-point spread also provides some value at +100.

  • Stallions vs Panthers Pick: Stallions -2.5 (+100)
