Massachusetts Reports Strong First Online Sports Betting Month

Massachusetts online sports betting apps reported a promising opening month of operation.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported $548,102,467 in handle for online sports betting and collected $9.1 million in taxes in March.
Strong First Month for Massachusetts Online Sports Betting
The state’s six online sports betting operators generated more than $548.1 million in handle and $45.6 million in taxable revenue for March. Online sports betting launched in the Commonwealth on March 10.
In total, Massachusetts reported $568.09 million in total handle for sports handle, $47.06 million in taxable gaming revenue, and generated $9.3 million in sports betting tax revenue. The state taxes online sports betting at a 20% rate and retail sports betting at a rate of 15%.
As expected, online sports betting dominated the month. The state’s six online sports betting operators accounted for 96.5% of the total sports betting handle, 96.9% of the total taxable revenue, and 97.6% of the total taxes collected.
Hometown operator DraftKings promotions reported the top handle figures, as the company totaled $257.6 million in handle for March. Here are the total handle figures for all six operators in the state.

FanDuel, however, generated the most taxes for the commonwealth, chipping in $3.2 million of the $9.1 million total for the month. Here are the total tax revenue figures for all six operators in the state.

Massachusetts Sports Betting Totals
Sports betting launched in Massachusetts with retail sports betting on Jan. 31, 2023. To date, the Commonwealth has collected approximately $9.65 million in total taxes and assessment from licensed operators. To date, 94.7% of the total sports betting tax revenues collected were from March online sports betting.
Of the total taxes amount for operators, 45% is allotted to the general fund, 17.5% to the workforce investment trust fund, 27.5% to the gaming local aid fund, 9% to the public health trust fund, and 1% to the youth development and achievement fund.
To date, the Commonwealth has collected approximately $1.374 billion in total taxes and assessments from the casino operations of Plainridge Park Casino, MGM and Encore since the openings of each gaming facility, according to the commission.
