- Athletes, players, and coaches are among the professions barred from online sports betting in New York
- The NYSGC recently added team owners, sports agents, and more to their list of prohibited sports bettors
- Online sports betting in New York is expected to launch within the coming weeks
It’s an exciting time for most New York sports bettors.
With the online NY sports betting launch just around the corner, the majority of people in the state will have direct access to betting with their favorite sportsbook apps and websites. That said, the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) has updated their rules and regulations to exclude certain professions from being able to bet on sports.
New York’s Banned Sports Bettors
The NYSGC already had a previous list of professions they considered to be “prohibited sports bettors.” The NYSGC document that listed these professions, “Part 5239: Sports Wagering at Casino Lounges and Other Public Casino Locations,” refers to these prohibited sports bettors as “any person or entity whose participation may undermine the integrity of mobile sports wagering on a sports event or the conduct of such sports event itself.” These professions include:
- Athletes
- Players
- Coaches
- Referees
- Physicians
- Trainers
- Employees of a sport’s governing body
That NYSGC document has been recently updated to include additional professions that the commission would describe as prohibited sports bettors. This includes:
- Sports agents
- Owners, employees, or independent contractors of a team, player union, or umpire union
- Officials or contractors of a sports governing body if the bets they’re making are on the sports their governing body oversees
It appears as though NYSGC is doing its best to ensure the integrity of New York online sports betting will remain intact ahead of the big launch. The commission is covering all its bases to see that there won’t be anyone with close ties to sports action who can bet on them in New York.
If you’re Kevin Durant, for example, it’s probably safe to say you won’t be allowed to put any money down on the Brooklyn Nets.
When is Online Sports Betting Launching in New York?
Exactly when online sports betting will launch in New York remains the million-dollar question—but you can rest assured knowing it’ll be sooner rather than later.
Online sports betting in New York is expected to launch in the coming weeks, and there are a number of major sportsbooks coming to the state for its much-anticipated debut. There’s plenty of reasons for sports bettors to get excited. New York sportsbooks are expected to follow suit with great bonus offers available in other states, like DraftKings Sportsbook’s $1,050 Sign Up Offer.
But DraftKings won’t be the only sportsbook bringing the heat to New York. FanDuel Sportsbook is expected to bring its First Bet Offer Up to $1,000 to sports bettors in the state as well. To cap things off, BetMGM is also likely going to bring its own $1,000 First Bet Sign Up Offer to the table.
