- Big name firepower headlines the field at the 2019 Sony Open
- Recent history has produced blowout wins or hotly contested playoffs
- We’ve narrowed down the golfers with the best chance of emerging victorious
The Sony Open has historically struggled to attract an elite field, but some of the biggest names in golf have teed it up the last few seasons and this year is no exception.
Justin Thomas bulldozed the field two years ago en route to a dominant victory highlighted by his amazing opening round 59 during his wire-to-wire victory and he could be poised to do it again.

Will Anyone Be Able to Beat Justin Thomas?
Justin Thomas has been playing some exceptional golf with no worse than a 36th place finish in his last 10 events highlighted by a victory last August and a solid third place showing last week at Kapalua.

However, since that W in August at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Thomas has not found the winners circle which seems unfathomable. There is absolutely no reason he can’t win for the second time in three years at Waialae Country Club but with odds at a low +650 I’d hesitate to throw some coin down on him this week.

Gary Woodland Poised to Atone from Heartbreak Last Week
Gary Woodland has held 54 hole leads in stroke play events seven times in his career – and hasn’t converted a single one. Last week the Sentry Tournament of Champions was particularly painful.
Gary Woodland started the day with a three-shot lead in a limited field, shot 5 under and lost. Damn.

Some golfers implode the following week after this happens whereas some knuckle down and get the job done. Bank on Woodland being in the mix this week and potentially notching his fourth victory.
Gary Woodland’s Last Four Sony Opens
Year | Result |
---|---|
2018 | T-7 |
2017 | T-6 |
2016 | T-13 |
2015 | T-3 |

That’s a tough one. Gary Woodland is also the man. Congratulates Xander Schauffle on the theft after an absurd 11-under 62. pic.twitter.com/xXpJWTeZjH

2019 Sony Open Best Value Picks
- Matt Kuchar (+4000): Making his first start in three years here, which is surprising with four top-eight finishes from 2011-15 at this tournament (didn’t play in 2012). Won two starts ago in Mexico.
- Kevin Tway (+5500): Won first PGA Tour event three months ago and was the first round leader last week at Sentry Tournament of Champions.
- Jimmy Walker (+8000): Boom or bust pick. Walker has missed the last two cuts at this event but won it twice in a row in 2014-15.
- Sam Burns (+10000): 22-year old whiz kid is a longshot worth considering. Finished third at Sanderson Farms Championship in October. Tons of talent and destined for stardom.
