Jeff Brohm Heavily Favored to be Next Head Coach at Louisville

Not much has gone right at Louisville since former Heisman winner Lamar Jackson left for the NFL.

The team has been sinking quick and tried to right the ship last week by firing head coach Bobby Petrino. It didn’t take long for books to hit us with the latest odds for the next Cardinals head coach.

Odds for next Louisville Head Coach

Jeff Brohm (-200) has already told the press that Louisville “is not his dream job”, but that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill.

Brohm is the current head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers and has not said that he would not entertain the move, just that he’s probably weighing his options at the moment. Brohm is one of the hottest commodities on the coaching market, and ever since his team beat Ohio State he’s been more or less untouchable. Nobody even noticed that his team got blown out by unranked Minnesota last weekend 41-10!

Brohm has been turning heads across the country with his team’s upsets of three top 25 schools thus far this year. It’s all been very impressive, but does Brohm deserve all the credit? Does Brohm deserve the job?

Something to consider when evaluating Chip Long’s impact on the Notre Dame offense.

With Long as offensive coordinator, Notre Dame has rushed for 240+ yards 11 times in 21 games.

In Brian Kelly’s first 90 games, Notre Dame hit 240 yards rushing just 12 times.

Other than Brohm, the other obvious choice for many would be Chip Long (+250), the offensive coordinator for the undefeated #3 ranked Notre Dame. Notre Dame has been among the best offensive teams in the country in 2018, and it would be a shock for Chip Long to stay in South Bend for long.

Could a Long Shot Get a Surprise Hire?

The other outside shots are Ryan Day (+300), Charlie Strong (+350), Brian Brohm (+400) and Lane Kiffin(+450).

Ryan Day  did post a perfect 3-0 record while holding the reigns for Urban Meyer earlier this season. He’s a decent option, but does have a bit of a prickly demeanour and comes from a somewhat toxic program. While Day was never questioned during the Urban Meyer controversy, there’s a chance Louisville doesn’t want to take any kind of risk with this hire.  The school has had to deal with enough of that over the past few years with Rick Pitino and the basketball program.

Charlie Strong is a name that could certainly surprise, given the odds. Strong is no stranger to the university, having coached there from 2010-2013. While at Louisville he won both Big East Coach of the Year (2010, 2012) and the Big East Championships (2011, 2012) on two occasions before leaving to coach the Texas Longhorns. While his three years in Austin weren’t overly memorable, he has posted a 17-5 record coaching in South Florida since.

Your final two contenders for the job are Brian Brohm and Lane Kiffin. Brian is Jeff’s brother and is also the offensive coordinator at Purdue. It’s unlikely the coordinator would be selected over the head coach in this instance. Meanwhile, Lane Kiffin is the 16-8 head coach of Florida Atlantic in Conference USA – enough said.
