It’s win and you’re into the NBA Playoffs Friday, when the Miami Heat (37-45, 17-23 away) visit the Atlanta Hawks (40-42, 21-19 home). Miami won its way into this position by going on the road and crushing the Chicago Bulls, while the Hawks were thumped pretty handily by the Orlando Magic in their 7-8 game.

The winner of this gets the eighth and final spot in the East and a trip to Cleveland to open Round 1 against the Cavaliers, the conference’s top seed. This one gets going at 7pm ET from State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA, with TNT broadcasting the game.

Both teams won’t be at full strength, but most of the major players should be in uniform. That includes Trae Young (Achilles), who is listed as probable. However, center Clint Capela (hand) and Larry Nance Jr (knee) will both miss the play-in. Nance will be out for the rest of the year.

For Miami, veteran Kevin Love (personal), guard Pelle Larson (ankle) and forward Nikola Jovic (hand) have been all listed as questionable against the Hawks.

Tyler Herro shares the scoring prop high with Atlanta’s Trae Young at 25.5 points, but they’re trending in opposite directions heading into this one. Herro is coming off a monster 38-point effort in a 109-90 win over the Bulls to advance in the play-in. He also added five rebounds and four assists.

Young finished with 28 points and six dimes against Orlando, but shot a rough 8-for-21 from the field, and was hounded all night by the Magic’s top-end defense. His frustration led to a 4th-quarter ejection for arguing with an official.

Young also leads with the highest assist total at 10.5, and the top 3-point make prop at 3.5.

Onyeka Okongwu has the highest rebounding total at 10.5, while Bam Adebayo is right behind him at 9.5.

Miami Heat vs Atlanta Hawks Picks

  • Heat vs Hawks pick: Heat -1 (-110)
  • Heat vs Hawks prop bet: Herro Over 25.5 points (-120)

It’s clear to everyone that Miami is not remotely close to the same team that’s been to the Finals twice over the last five years, but they do have some of the old bones of the structure, and that’s one thing I didn’t expect to see when they trounced the Bulls.

Tyler Herro has been an exceptional shot maker with plenty of playoff reps, so it makes sense he would look in a groove in a game with high stakes, opening 8-for-8 from the field in the first half.

Veteran Andrew Wiggins, the main return in the trade for Jimmy Butler, looked good too, dropping 20 points, adding nine boards, with a pair of steals and blocks.

Miami also got a classic Bam Adebayo grind-out effort, as he scored 15 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and picked up a couple of steals, anchoring a defense that clamped down on the Bulls.

The Heat’s defense, which was seventh in scoring during the regular season, held the Bulls to their lowest scoring output of the year, limiting them to 39.8% shooting from the field, including a rough 10-for-37 from 3-point range, just a 27% clip.

That was about in line with what the Magic put the Hawks through, as Atlanta could only muster 95 points on 38.1% shooting, including a 4-for-21 night from distance (19%).

Atlanta just hasn’t had a reliable second scoring option behind Young. Jalen Johnson looked like he was stepping into that role before a season-ending injury, but no one else has stepped up. No other player scored more than 15 points against the Magic, and that was reserve Georges Niang. Atlanta’s other starters scored 37 points to Young’s 28.

The two teams split the regular season series, with Atlanta taking the first two at home, and Miami taking the more recent two on their home court, winning by double digits both times.

Young has been held to 17 points or less in three of those games, though he did drop 29 points and 12 assists in the regular season finale between these teams.

I think Atlanta will be feisty, but Miami has a veteran group that should be able to wear down Young and the Hawks to advance.
