Saquon Barkley has the best odds to score Super Bowl 59’s first touchdown. Barkley is given as short as +400 odds to find the endzone first, but as long as +450. If you bet $20 on Barkley to score the first TD at +450 with DraftKings, your potential profit would be $90 and your return would be $110. After Barkley, we have Jalen Hurts, the Eagles quarterback, with the second-best odds to score the first TD. Hurts is getting +600 odds, meaning a $20 bet on him could win you $120 and return $140.
If you’re wondering why two Eagles have the best odds to score the game’s first TD, but Philadelphia is not favored to win the game, it’s because Hurts and Barkley have dominated the team’s touchdowns. Kansas City, on the other hand, has spread their touchdowns out a lot more.
Super Bowl 1st TD Scorer Prediction
Considering the odds above, some of the TD trends for both teams that can be found below, as well as how these two teams match up, I am predicting Xavier Worthy to score the first touchdown of the 2025 Super Bowl. His +1200 odds at BetMGM present good value when you look at how much the Chiefs have been using him in the red zone. I break down why I like Worthy to score in my Super Bowl TD picks.
I completely understand anyone wanting to bet Saquon Barkley or Jalen Hurts from the Eagles to score the first TD, but I think their respective prices are too short – they do score such a large portion of Philadelphia’s touchdowns and the Eagles have scored the first TD in all three of their playoff games, accomplishing the feat on their first drive in each game. However, the Eagles might open the game playing defense, and I not only like Andy Reid to come out aggressive, but the Eagles haven’t faced a defense of the Chiefs caliber in the playoffs.
Kansas City scored a TD on their first drive of the game in the AFC Championship last week. They only managed a FG on their first drive of the Divisional Round against the Texans, but they did go on to score the game’s first TD as well.
The Chiefs went three-and-out on their first drive of last year’s Super Bowl, and saw their opponent score the first TD of the game. When these two teams met in Super Bowl 57, they both scored TDs on their first drives, but the Eagles possessed the ball first. Jalen Hurts was the first TD scorer in that game, with Travis Kelce scoring a TD right afterwards.

Philadelphia has scored the first touchdown of the game in 15 of their 20 games this season, which includes scoring the first TD in each of their three playoff games. The Eagles are 15-2 when they score the game’s first touchdown versus 4-1 when their opponent scores the game’s first touchdown.
Here’s a quick look at the trends we have seen from the players who have scored the first touchdown in Eagles’ games this season:
- Saquon Barkley has scored Philadelphia’s first touchdown in six of 20 games this season, and all six were the game’s first TD as well. He scored the first TD of the game in the NFC Championship, but it was the first time Barkley had done so since Week 16
- Jalen Hurts is a close second with five of the Eagles’ first TDs, but only three of them were the game’s first TD
- Wide receivers have scored the first TD for Philadelphia in seven of their games, with four of those belonging to AJ Brown. No other WR has scored the Eagles’ first TD in more than one game
- Wide receivers have been the position to score the first touchdown against Philadelphia most often with it happening in nine of 20 games, and account for two of the five occasions where the Eagles’ opponent scored the first touchdown of the game. WRs have scored the first TD against Philadelphia in four of their last six games.

The Chiefs have scored the first touchdown in 11 of the 19 games they have played this season (regular season and playoffs), which includes scoring the first TD in both of their playoff games. They did not score a touchdown in Week 18 when they rested the vast majority of their starters. Kansas City is 11-0 when they score the game’s first TD, but are 6-2 when their opponent scores the first touchdown of the game.
Here is a quick look at some of the trends we have seen from the players who have scored the first touchdown, whether it be for or against, in Chiefs’ games this season:
- A wide receiver has scored Kansas City’s first TD of the game in 10 of 19 this season, which is the most common position
- Kareem Hunt is the player who has scored the Chiefs first TD the most, finding the endzone first in five games, which includes each of their last two (both playoff games). Each time he has scored Kansas City’s first TD, it has also been the game’s first TD
- When their starters have played, Kansas City has scored the first TD of the game in each of their last eight
- A wide receiver has scored the opposing team’s first TD against the Chiefs in eight of 19 games, the most common position to do so. However, a WR has only scored the first TD against the Chiefs once in the last eight games
- Running backs have scored the opposing team’s first TD against the Chiefs in both of their playoff games

Max McGee, a wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers, scored the first ever touchdown in Super Bowl 1. McGee scored on a 37-yard pass from Bart Starr.
Jalen Hurts opened the scoring in Super Bowl 57, pushing across the goal line on a QB sneak on the first drive of the game. It didn’t come without a little controversy, though, as Kenneth Gainwell was believed to have scored the first TD on the previous play, but replay showed he came up inches short. The last ten Super Bowls have seen three wide receivers open the scoring, three running backs, two quarterbacks, one tight end, and one defensive player.
Here are some more Super Bowl first TD scorer trends you should know before betting:
- Wide receivers have scored the first touchdown in 23 of 59 Super Bowls, the most of any position group
- Running backs are the second-most common first touchdown scorer in Super Bowls, accounting for 17 first TDs in Super Bowls
- A defensive player has scored the first touchdown in two Super Bowls—Malik Jackson for the Broncos in Super Bowl 50 and Ty Law for the Patriots in Super Bowl 36
- A special teams player has scored the first touchdown in three Super Bowls—Devin Hester for the Bears in Super Bowl 41, Stanford Jennings for the Bengals in Super Bowl 23, and Derrick Jensen for the Rams in Super Bowl 18
- The team who scores the first touchdown in the Super Bowl has gone on to win 42 of the 59 Super Bowls, which includes 12 of the last 15
- We have not seen the same position score the first touchdown in back-to-back Super Bowls since 46 and 47 when wide receivers (Victor Cruz and Anquan Boldin) did it in back-to-back years
